Chapter 10

Morning light crept into the log den. Whisper still slept, his tall frame folded into the soft bedding. Raven watched his chest rise and fall. Last night they had called each other equal partners. She wanted him to know something more. Her old wound, the loss she carried since she was a kit, no longer ruled her. This bond ruled her now. But she had no way to say it that would last. Raven slipped outside. The frost had thinned. She sat at the mouth of the den and dragged her claws through the dirt the way she always did when her mind worked. Words came to her. She needed a place to put them. Her eyes found a slab of bark near the log's base. It had fallen loose, dry and flat. Raven pulled it close with one paw. She pressed a claw to the surface and scratched the first line. The bark was tough. Her paw ached. She carved slow, deep strokes, the same claws that once tore the gray creature in the dark. She would not stop this time. Letter by letter, she cut the words she meant. RAVEN LOVES WHISPER. When she finished, she blew the shavings away and looked at it. It would not rot fast. It would not blow off in the wind. It was made to stay. A sound came behind her. Whisper had woken. He stood in the den's mouth, blinking at the pale light, his blue eyes still heavy with sleep. "You left the nest," he said. His deep voice carried the small catch of his accent. "I felt the cold where you were." Raven turned the bark toward him. "I made this for you." Whisper came closer. He looked down at the scratched words. For a long moment he said nothing. Raven's tail curled tight. She had never given him anything that could not be eaten or worn away. "You carved this," he said. "With the claws you were afraid of." "Those claws hurt something once," Raven said. "I wanted them to make something too. Something that says I'm not running anymore. Not from you." Whisper pressed his nose to the bark, then to her cheek. His whole body leaned into hers. "I will keep it," he said. "Wherever we go, I carry it." Raven let out a breath she had held too long. The old anger, the loss that lived in her chest for years, sat quiet now. She had marked this new chapter with her own claws, and it would not fade. Whisper lifted the bark gently in his teeth and set it inside the den, tucked in the soft bedding beside his mother's acorn cap. Two tokens now, one from each of them. He looked back at Raven. "The slope has dried," he said. "We can go down together." Raven rose. The mountain lay below them, and the long way home. This time she was not the only one carrying something that mattered.
