Chapter 11

The climb down took them all morning. By the time Raven and Whisper reached the clearing, the sun had crossed overhead. This was the place where it all began, where Raven had first left catmint for a stray who trusted no one. Now Whisper walked beside her, his mother's acorn cap and the carved bark safe in their den far behind. But Raven stopped at the clearing's edge. Something was missing. They had tokens they carried, but no mark on this ground. No place to say they belonged here together. "We have a home," Raven said. "But no one would know it. Nothing here shows we joined our lives." Whisper sat beside her. He dragged one paw slow through the grass. "My mother marked her den with claw lines on the door log," he said. His deep voice went quiet. "So the forest knew it was hers." Raven's ears turned. She rose and paced the clearing, nose low. Then her paw struck something hard under the moss. She pulled the moss back. A gray stone stood there, tall as Whisper, half sunk in the earth. Carved cats stared out from its face, worn soft by years. Paw prints ringed its base. Under the faces ran old marks, a promise cut by cats long dead. "An ancestor stone," Raven breathed. "Cats made this to swear they'd stay." Whisper stepped close. He read the worn cat faces with wide blue eyes. "It has been here longer than us," he said. "Longer than my mother." Raven pressed her claw to the stone. It was harder than bark. Her paw ached at once. But she had carved through fear before. She cut the first line beside the old marks. Whisper leaned in and set his own claw to the stone. Together they scratched, stroke by stroke, two names into the ancient rock. RAVEN. WHISPER. The work took a long time. Shavings of stone dust fell around their paws. When they finished, Raven blew the dust away. Their names sat under the carved cats, joined to a promise cut ages ago. "Now the clearing knows," Raven said. "This is our home. Anyone who passes will see we chose it." Whisper pressed his nose to the fresh marks, then to her cheek. "Rooted," he said. "Like the stone." Raven looked at the names and felt the last loose thing in her settle. Their bond had a place now, and the place would outlast them both. She sat back on her haunches, her claws quiet against the ground for once. All they needed now was a shelter where they could lay side by side. A shelter that would keep them warm on cold windy nights. A place to build their dreams together.
