Chapter 3

Morning came, and Raven walked to the dock without a single gift. Yesterday she had traded truths and won his trust. Today she carried nothing to hide behind. She stopped at the worn wooden corner where the planks met the water. Whisper waited there, thin and gray, his blue eyes fixed on the ripples. She had learned to bring him things. She had never learned to just sit near a cat and speak. Her chest went tight. She feared she would freeze. Whisper looked up. His face held that same bored calm, but his tail flicked once when he saw her come empty-pawed. "You kept it," he said. His deep voice rolled soft, warmed by that small strange lilt. "No plants." "No plants," Raven said. Then nothing else came. Her claws found a plank and dragged four lines through the old wood. The scratch filled the quiet. She hated it. She wanted to run up the nearest post and vanish where no words were needed. Whisper watched her claws work. He did not flinch. "You do that when you're scared," he said. It was not a question. Raven froze mid-scratch. He had seen her. She could lie, or leave, or say the true thing. She made herself say it. "I don't know how to do this," she said. "Bring food, I know. Bring scent, I know. Sit here with nothing and be plain, I've never done it." He was quiet a moment. Then he stepped closer along the planks and sat beside her, their shoulders almost touching. "Neither have I," he said. "My mother and I never had guests. I don't know how either." Something loosened in Raven's chest. The fear did not vanish, but it stopped choking her. They sat and said small things. She told him she could smell a storm two valleys off. He told her he liked the sound of water on wood. The talk came slow and broke often, and neither ran. Before she left, Raven pressed one paw into the planks and lifted it. A tiny feather clung to her pad, black and purple, dotted, faint glitter in its edges. She did not know how it got there. She held it out to him. "That's not a gift," she said quickly. "I didn't bring it. I found it just now." Whisper studied the feather, then her. For the first time she saw his mouth curve. "Then keep it," he said. "Something you found here. With me." She closed her paw around it. She had come afraid she would freeze, and she had not. She had sat with him honest and empty and it had held. Yet as she walked home, the small feather pressed to her pad, she felt the pull of the high ridge again. Wet stone. Something burned. Something alive. She had a cat to sit beside now. She also had a place she still meant to face.
