Chapter 4

The feather still pressed to Raven's pad the next morning, but the ridge pulled harder. Wet stone. Something burned. Something alive. She had gone twice and slipped away without a word, and each time she came back she saw Whisper's eyes track her, quiet and careful. He had lost enough. If she vanished again to face the ridge alone, he would think she had run from him. She could not let him think that. So she did the plain thing. She walked to the dock and found him waiting near the water, thin and gray, a basket of fish beside him. He nudged one toward her with his paw. "You caught these," she said. "Traded for them." His tail flicked. "You keep smelling something far off. Your nose lifts. Then you leave." Raven's claws found the plank and stopped. She made herself hold still. "There's a ridge," she said. "Miles off. It smells of burned things and wet stone and something living. I got close once and stopped. I don't know why. I mean to go back." Whisper watched her. "Alone," he said. It was not a question. "I've always gone alone." He was quiet a while. Then he reached under his paw and pushed something small across the wood. An acorn cap, worn smooth, brown and cared for. "My mother gave me this," he said. "Before the bear. I kept it through the dark den. Through everything." He nudged it closer. "I don't give it. I'm coming with you. This is so you know I mean it." Raven stared at the little cap. Her chest went tight, but not with fear. "You'd leave the dock?" "I'd leave it." She could take him and slow herself to his pace. She could refuse and go fast and alone, the way she always had. She looked at his blue eyes and knew which choice would break the thing they had built. "Come, then," she said. They ate the fish first. Then Whisper reached into a fold of cloth and drew out a handkerchief, pale and soft. He pressed it to her flank. "It smells like me," he said. "If we lose each other on the way, follow it back." Raven breathed it in. His scent, plain and warm. She had lost a companion once as a kit, something that ran beside her and vanished. She had been angry ever since. Now a cat handed her his mother's keepsake and his own scent and asked to run into the unknown at her side. They set out together, the ridge waiting far ahead. Raven did not slip away. For the first time she faced the pull with someone beside her, matching her steps, the acorn cap tucked safe against her fur. She had feared the ridge would take her alone into the dark. Now she carried Whisper's trust up toward it. The old goal remained: to win his heart. But the retreat was over. She would not vanish from him again.
