Chapter 1

Rose wanted the empty seat on the noble council, and the lord who called her unfit had just made it harder to reach. She read his lie in the morning's court gossip, delivered by a nervous clerk to her pearl-toned townhouse. The lord had told every ear that she maimed each suitor who courted her. The whispers had grown teeth. Now the councilors said she was too dangerous to seat. Rose set down the note and touched the jeweled dagger at her hip. The rumor twisted a true thing. Yes, she had cut men. Each one had grabbed first. But the lord had turned her defense into a warning, and warnings kept women out of council chairs. She needed proof that men could stand beside her and leave whole. A letter would not do it. A living person would. She called for her carriage and rode to the training yard. Dara Glenwick did not look up when Rose entered. The swordsmaster drilled a line of young fighters, barking counts, her scarred hands correcting a boy's grip. Rose had trained under her once, years ago. Dara had never smiled at her, but she had never lied to her either. That was worth more than a smile. Rose waited until the drill ended. "I need someone the court cannot call weak," she said. "Someone who will stand at my side and walk away unhurt. It would silence the lord." Dara wiped her blade and studied Rose. "You want to parade me." "I want a partner who can hold a sword better than any suitor," Rose said. "You know what he's saying about me. You know it's a lie." The swordsmaster's scowl held. Then she looked at Rose's dagger, at the steady hand resting on it. Something in her face shifted. "I've watched fools grab at you since you were sixteen," Dara said. "Every one deserved the cut." She sheathed her sword. "I'll stand with you. Not for the seat. Because you asked plain, and you meant it." They went to court together the next day. The councilors watched Dara enter beside Rose, hand near her own hilt, unmarked and unafraid. Rose spoke without heat. "You heard I maim those who stand near me. Here stands the finest blade in Nettlevale. Ask her if she fears my dagger." Dara said only, "I've drilled her. She strikes to defend, never to boast. Any man who bled by her hand earned it." The hall went quiet. The lie cracked. One councilor nodded. Another looked to the lord, whose jaw tightened. The rumor died in that room. But the lord rose from his bench and smiled thin. "A swordsmaster vouches for a swordswoman," he said. "Fitting. Yet the council does not seat those who solve every problem with a blade. Prove you can rule without one." Rose had killed the whispers. Now she needed to prove she could govern, not fight. The lord had already chosen her next test.
