Rosetta watches through the front window as her Thursday night crowd walks past. They don't even glance in. Their faces are bright, their steps quick, all aimed two blocks down where the new place just opened. She counts them as they go. Marcus and his crew. The college girls who always order the same round. The couple who sits at the far end and shares fries. She steps outside to see what they're running toward. The rooftop lounge glows above the street like a jewel box. Glass walls catch the light. Brass railings gleam. String lights drape through leafy branches overhead, making everything look warm and alive. A line snakes down the exterior stairs, people waiting just to get in. She hears music and laughter floating down. Her own bar has none of that pull. Back inside, the silence feels heavier. Six empty stools. Two occupied tables. A phone sits abandoned on the bar top, its screen dark. Someone left in such a hurry they forgot it. She picks it up and sets it by the register. The door stays quiet. No one new comes in. Rosetta wipes down the bar even though it's already clean. She straightens bottles that don't need straightening. Fine isn't good enough anymore. It never was. But now she can see exactly what beats fine, and it's two blocks away, packed with her people. She needs more than working lights and clean surfaces. She needs what they have up there. The gap between her bar and that rooftop just became impossible to ignore.
