Rosetta watches through the front window as her Thursday night crowd walks past. They don't even glance in. Their faces are bright, their steps quick, all aimed two blocks down where the new place just opened. She counts them as they go. Marcus and his crew. The college girls who always order the same round. The couple who sits at the far end and shares fries. She steps outside to see what they're running toward. The rooftop lounge glows above the street like a jewel box. Glass walls catch the light. Brass railings gleam. String lights drape through leafy branches overhead, making everything look warm and alive. A line snakes down the exterior stairs, people waiting just to get in.
