Chapter 2

Rupert stood at the edge of his dirt outline and frowned. The Amethyst Haven Tavern was just a dream scratched in the ground. He needed to understand what people actually wanted before he built anything. His ears twitched as he pulled a small notebook from his satchel and opened it to a blank page. He'd start simple—listen first, then act. For three days, he positioned himself on different corners of the square, watching who talked to whom and what made them lean in close. The fishmonger's daughter always whispered when the ship captain passed by. Two merchants haggled loudest when others were watching. Rupert scribbled notes about timing, about which secrets people guarded and which ones they shared freely. On the fourth morning, he sat on the center stone and reviewed his pages. People wanted to trade information, but they needed trust first. They needed proof that secrets had value. He snapped the notebook shut and smiled. Before he built his tavern, he'd prove himself as the village's most reliable dealer in whispers. That evening, Rupert unwrapped a street lamp from its cloth covering. The ornate metalwork caught the fading sunlight, but the real prize sat at its top—a purple flame that needed no oil or wick. He positioned the lamp at the tavern's future entrance, right where his dirt outline met the square's main path. The flame flickered to life with a gentle shake, casting strange shadows across the ground. Rupert stepped back and watched as three villagers slowed their walk to stare. One pointed. Another whispered to her companion. The lamp's glow would keep his spot visible after sunset, when the best secrets came out. He rang his purple bell twice, sharp and clear. Two merchants approached, curious. Rupert grinned and leaned against the lamp post. His gossip exchange had just gained its first landmark, and the evening crowd was already gathering. The next morning, Rupert hauled a slanted newsstand into the square. The wood was blue and purple, rotted in places, but the grey stone letters across the top were clear: TABLOIDS. He positioned it near the purple lamp and stepped back to judge the effect. The stand looked ancient, like it had survived storms and scandals for decades. Perfect. He pulled out several blank pages from his satchel and pinned them to the stand's front. Within an hour, a merchant stopped to read the empty boards. Then another. By midday, Rupert had filled the first page with a single line: "Purple algae stains tell midnight stories." Three villagers gathered to read it. One checked her boots and hurried away. Rupert watched from the center stone, his tail swishing with satisfaction. His gossip exchange now had a headquarters, a beacon, and its first posted secret. The village square was transforming exactly as he'd planned. By afternoon, Rupert added a magazine stand beside the tabloid board. The purple wood gleamed under its coating of moss, looking older than the square itself. He tucked a few blank papers into its slots and stepped back. Villagers could leave secrets here without speaking them aloud—anonymous trades for those too nervous to bargain face to face. A woman in a green shawl paused, glanced around, then slipped a folded note into the stand. Rupert pretended not to notice. He waited until she left, then retrieved the paper. It read: "The shipwright owes money to someone important." He grinned and tucked it into his notebook. His gossip exchange was working. People were sharing information, building trust, proving that secrets had real value. The purple lamp glowed as dusk settled over the square. Rupert rang his bell once, watching villagers turn toward the sound. His dream was no longer just dirt lines and empty promises. The realm's premier gossip exchange had opened for business.
