Chapter 1

Tomorrow the pack would judge Sable Vorn, and he still did not know why they had killed his father. He wanted the wolf throne back. His father had held it once, before a rival tore it away and left a widow carrying a son. Now Sable sat in the shared heart of the communal house, staring at the black marble fireplace, rehearsing answers he could not give. His mother sat across from him in the brown chair. She had raised him alone here, among wolves who whispered when he passed. She was old now, her hands thin, but her eyes still tracked every door. "They will ask what your father did," Sable said. "They will say he deserved to fall. I have no answer." She gripped the cushioned arms. "Then say nothing." "Saying nothing means I lose." He leaned toward her. "You were there. You know the reason they overthrew him. You have hidden it my whole life. Tell me tonight, or I walk into that hall empty-handed." She looked away, toward a jar of towering sunflowers a neighbor had left at the door. Her jaw worked. For a long moment she said nothing at all. "Your father did not lose the throne in battle," she finally said. "He gave it away. The rival held me. Your father traded the throne for my life, and for yours. The pack called it weakness. They cast us out and named him a coward." Sable sat back. The fire cracked behind him. "He chose us," she said. "I hid it because I feared you would blame yourself. You were the price." Sable stared at the black marble, at the empty hearth. All his life he had believed his father was beaten. Instead his father had bought two lives with a crown. The shame the pack had thrown at him was a lie built on love. "Then they judged him wrong," Sable said. His voice was low and steady. "And I can prove it." His mother reached across and caught his wrist. "If you speak this, the rival will deny it. He rules now. He will not let the truth stand. He will call you a liar and demand your throat." "Let him." Sable rose from the chair. The amber in his eyes did not waver. "Tomorrow I walk into the hall. I tell them what my father truly did. And I name the man who forced the trade." Outside, wind pushed against the wooden walls. Somewhere in the house, a door opened and shut. His mother's hand fell from his wrist. "You have your answer," she whispered. "Now it may kill you." Sable looked at the cold hearth one last time. He had wanted a truth to defend his name. He had gotten a truth that turned a coward into a hero and made an enemy of the pack's own Alpha. There was no taking it back now.
