Chapter 2

Sable never reached the judgment. A boy pounded on the communal door before dawn and shouted the news. A challenger had called a blood-duel. He meant to kill the current Alpha at first light and take the throne himself. If he won, no judgment would happen. No truth would be told. Sable's proof would die unspoken, and a new master would sit the wolf throne. Sable ran to the Wolfring Gathering Hall. Stone wolves flanked the entrance, watching the crowd pour onto the dirt floor. The challenger already stood in the open center. He was young and thick-armed, stripped to the waist, grinning at the Alpha across the ring. Neither man would let Sable speak. Their fight would settle everything before he could say a word. He pushed toward the ring. An old woman blocked his path. She did not raise her voice, but the people near her went quiet at once. This was the Thornpaw pack, wolves with no land of their own, and she was their eldest. Her name was Maren. She watched him the way she watched everything, close and unhurried. "You want the ring," Maren said. "Everyone here wants something. Say your claim fast." "If either man wins, the truth dies with the trade my father made." Sable met her eyes. "I can prove the pack judged him wrong. Give me the floor before they draw blood." Maren studied him. Behind her, small children clutched adult hands and stared at the two fighters. She had dragged these people from camp to camp for years, still hunting a home. He saw her weigh him against that. "A duel makes a quick Alpha," she said. "Quick Alphas make new wars. My children have slept in the cold through three of them." She turned to the ring. "I claim right of witness before the blood. Old law." The hall stilled. The Alpha's head came up. The challenger spat and stepped forward, but the elders around Maren moved with her, and the weight shifted. Old law held. The fight could wait for a witness. Maren pointed at Sable. "He speaks. Then you two can kill each other." Sable walked into the center. The stone wolves seemed to lean toward him. He looked at the Alpha, the man who forced his father's trade, and told the pack the truth. His father gave the crown to save a woman and a child. He was no coward. The pack had cursed a man for love. The Alpha shouted him down and called for the duel. But the words were loose now. Wolves murmured. The challenger looked less certain of what throne he was fighting for. The blood-duel would still happen. Sable had not stopped it. But he had spoken first, and the pack had heard him. The truth was out, and now every wolf in the hall had to choose what it meant.
