Chapter 3

The truth was out, but truth alone did not make Sable one of them. A gray-bearded man near the ring said it plain. "Words are cheap. You claim the old blood. Then show us the wolf." The crowd took up the demand. They believed his father's story now. They did not yet believe in him. If Sable could not shift here, on this dirt floor, the pack would never name him blood-kin, and no claim to the throne would stand. Maren raised one hand. The pack went quiet at once. She was the eldest, the small old woman who had dragged these people from camp to camp for years, and when she stilled, the whole hall stilled with her. She watched Sable the way she watched everything, close and unhurried. "He asks a fair thing," she said. "A son of the throne carries the wolf. Show them, or go." Sable stepped to the open center. The stone wolves flanked the entrance behind him. Children pressed against their parents' legs and stared. He had shifted a hundred times alone in the woods. He had never done it while an entire pack decided his worth. The fear tightened his chest. His hands stayed hands. He shut his eyes. He stopped reaching for the wolf and let the wolf reach for him. It came with things he had never been taught. The smell of his father's coat. A den he had never seen. Then the change tore through him. Bone bent. Amber hair spread into fur. He dropped to four paws on the dirt. The hall drew one breath together. The wolf lifted its head. It was white, tall, and it knew this ground somehow, the way old feet know a floor. It walked a slow circle around the ring. Grown wolves lowered their eyes as it passed. A small child laughed, unafraid, and reached out to touch its shoulder. Sable shifted back and stood, breathing hard, a man again. No one called him liar now. The gray-bearded man went to one knee. Others followed, slow, uncertain, then sure. Even the challenger who had come to kill for the throne stood watching with his arms slack. Maren did not kneel. She crossed the dirt and stopped close, so only he could hear. "They will follow you now," she said quietly. "That is the danger. My children have slept cold through three wars. A pack that believes in a man will bleed for him." She looked at him hard. "So be worth it. Or leave us where you found us." Sable had won the pack. He had also inherited them. Every wolf in the hall now looked to him for a home, and the throne he meant to take was still held by the man who had forced his father's trade. He was blood-kin now. The whole weight of them had shifted onto his back.
