Venus left the arena with the judges' whispers still in her ears. Her rival had glittered under the lights. She had not. Her plain jacket would not survive the next round. She needed a stage-ready look, and she needed it today. She hurried down a row of pop-up shops near the venue. A tall display stopped her cold. A mannequin stood under a soft blue glow, its metallic dress shimmering with tiny lights sewn into the fabric. The dress moved like water. This was the place. Inside the shop, the owner watched her with sharp, pale eyes. She wore long robes and a quiet smile, and she moved like someone used to attention. "You're a performer," she said. It was not a question. She pulled three outfits from the rack before Venus could answer. Venus tried them on quickly. A fitted silver top. Soft pants that caught the light. Boots that did not pinch. Then her eyes caught a small tray on the counter. A golden heart pendant lay there, glowing faintly pink and orange. She lifted it. It felt warm. It felt like hers — not a Scout's symbol, not a costume piece. Just a girl's favorite thing. She paid with shaking hands. The total nearly emptied her wallet. Outside, she passed a vendor stall draped in bright iridescent cloth, its shelves stacked with crystal trinkets. She did not stop. She had what she needed. Back at her room, she laid the outfit on the bed and clasped the pendant at her throat. In the mirror, a girl looked back at her — bright, ready, unfamiliar. She smiled. Then her phone buzzed. The next round's theme had been posted. It was not a solo. It was a duet, and partners had already been assigned.
