Venus arrived at the outdoor venue before sunset. A tall mirrored stage rose at the center of the plaza, ringed by curved metal seats that climbed in tight circles. Every row faced inward. Every seat pointed at her. The crowd was filling fast. She touched the pendant at her throat. It was warm. Too warm. A low hum buzzed against her collarbone, soft but steady, like a second heartbeat she had not asked for. Backstage, she met her duet partner, a quiet girl in a glowing blue dress that shimmered like deep water. They ran through the song once. The pendant pulsed harder. Venus pressed her palm over it and felt golden light leak between her fingers. Swirling patterns moved inside the stone. If it flared onstage, every camera would catch it. She ducked behind a curtain, heart loud. She closed her eyes. A memory rose, unbidden — a soft voice she barely remembered, a woman in white with a crescent on her brow. "She does not even know my name now," the voice had once said. Queen Serenity. Her mother, in another life. Venus did not understand why the memory came now. But the words steadied her. Be known for who you choose to be. She unclasped the pendant. Her hands shook. She wrapped it in a scarf and pushed it deep into her bag. The hum stopped. Her chest felt cold and bare. Then her partner called her name, and Venus stepped onto the mirrored stage with nothing magical on her skin. They sang. Venus did not blank. She did not glitter. Her voice was small but steady, and the duet held. The judges gave them a passing score — barely. She walked off the stage knowing two things. She had survived without the pendant. And whatever that golden stone really was, it had been waiting to expose her all along.
