Chapter 1
Saraphillia had built the hidden fortress for people like herself: gifted, strange, and misunderstood. Now a Guild rider was climbing the mountain trail to expose them all. She watched him from the cliff, her red hair glowing under her green hood. His tracking dog pulled hard against its leash, nose down, following a scent that led straight to her outcasts.
Below her, twelve refugees crowded inside the fortress walls. One of them, a half-elf, carried a Guild brand burned into his skin. The dog had caught that mark. Saraphillia knew a false scent trail alone would not fool a Guild-trained hound. She had tried that trick before. It failed.
She opened a box on her shelf and lifted out a folded charm. From it slipped a small fox with shimmering blue fur that glowed against the frost. She had raised it to lead travelers astray. Beside it stirred a second fox, orange and marked with pale lines of light. Saraphillia knelt and spoke to both. "Take him to the far gully. Make him believe."
The foxes were not enough. A hound trusts its nose, not its eyes. Saraphillia pressed her thumb to her own wrist, where a myth had once stolen the use of her hand for three weeks. She still did not know how it hurt her. But she had learned to read the silence around broken things. She reached into another box and drew out a tiny fairy, nearly invisible, no bigger than her palm.
"Circle the hills," she told the fairy. "Carry the branded man's scent away from the walls." The fairy lifted, unseen, and threaded through the cold air toward the rider. Guild scouts could not track what they could not see.
The rider stopped where the trail split. His dog jerked left, then right, confused. The blue fox flashed across the rocks. The orange fox darted the other way. The dog howled and lunged after the shimmer, dragging the rider toward the far gully. The fairy dropped the false scent along the decoy path.
Saraphillia held her breath. On the ridge above, her crow-butterfly sentinel spread its patterned wings and watched the rider go. The man cursed and let the dog run. He believed the trail was real.
Hours later, the sentinel returned and landed on her wrist. The rider had reached the empty gully, found nothing, and marked it as a dead end. He turned his horse back down the mountain. Her outcasts were safe.
Saraphillia climbed down to the fortress gate. The half-elf waited, shaking, his branded arm hidden in his sleeve. "They'll send more," he said.
"They will," she answered. The dog had followed his brand. As long as that mark burned on his skin, no charm would hide him for long. She looked at the boxes on her shelf and knew the next attempt would have to reach the brand itself.
