Chapter 2

The rider was gone, but the brand remained. Saraphillia stood in her workroom and turned the half-elf's arm toward the light. The Guild mark sat burned into his skin, dark and raised. As long as it stayed, the hounds would find him again. She had to unmake it. But she had never unmade a Guild brand, and a myth had once stolen her own hand for three weeks. If she guessed wrong here, she could cripple his. She pulled the boxes from her shelf, one after another. Each held a broken myth. She did not read the stories inside. She read the silences around them, the gaps where a tale had once bent and snapped. Somewhere in those gaps was the shape a brand made when it stopped believing in itself. A knock came at the gate. Mara Thornshield stepped inside, hood damp, boots muddy from the climb. Saraphillia had traded goods through Mara's routes before, but never let her past the wall. Mara ran a covert network against the Guild. She measured a good day by a trader walking out free. "Marigold sent me," Mara said. "She says you keep broken things." She looked at the half-elf's arm, then at the boxes. "That's a Guild brand. Burn it off and you burn the man." "I'm not going to burn it," Saraphillia said. "I'm going to unmake it." Mara did not ask what that meant. "Have you done it?" "No." "Then don't practice on his hand." Mara pulled a folded receipt from her belt. It carried a stranger's name, not hers. "Guild paper. Practice on this." Saraphillia took it. The name on it belonged to no one she knew. A false name, sold and resold until it meant nothing. That was its own kind of broken myth. She set the receipt on the table beside the boxes and pressed her thumb to her wrist, to the place that had once gone dead. She listened for the silence in the paper. The brand and the receipt were the same lie, told in ink and told in fire. She found the gap where the Guild's story stopped holding. She reached into it, not to cut, but to let go. The ink on the receipt curled and faded. The name lifted off and was gone. Her hand stayed whole. "Again," Mara said. "On skin this time. Slower." Saraphillia turned to the half-elf. He offered his arm. She found the silence in the brand, the same as the paper, and she loosened it. The mark grew pale. The raised skin sank flat. It did not burn. It simply stopped meaning what the Guild had made it mean. The half-elf flexed his hand. Whole. Unmarked. "The hounds won't find me," he said. "Not by that," Saraphillia said. But she looked at Mara. Someone had told the Guild a name. And her twin was hoarding names in a drawer.
