Chapter 48

Saturday morning Scarlett woke before Clayton. The clinic news sat in her chest like a warm stone. Normal hemoglobin. Two babies measuring ahead. No needle on Thursday. She wanted to mark it somehow, just the two of them, before the phone started ringing and the yard filled again with trucks and casseroles. But the porch still held yesterday's stacked dishes. Rose was coming at noon. Maya after. The day would eat the news whole if she let it. She slid out of bed and stood at the window. Clayton's boots were by the door. His hat hung on the hook she'd put there a year ago. She had no plan and no time to build one. Then she remembered the cedar box under the bed, the one she'd carried to the honeymoon and back. She pulled it out. Inside were the lace nightgown, a folded ribbon, and space enough for something new. She dressed and walked to the greenhouse. The cracked pane on the north wall caught the early light. She cut two sprigs of rosemary and one late tomato blossom and laid them in the box. Then she drove to town before the shops opened, waited on the bench outside the clinic, and asked the front desk nurse for a copy of yesterday's chart. Dr. Wishborne came out herself, gray bun pinned high, glasses low on her nose, still holding a coffee. "You're back already." "I want the numbers on paper. For us. Not the file." The doctor studied her over the rims. "Frame it if you want. You earned it." She wrote the hemoglobin figure, the twins' measurements, and the two names Scarlett and Clayton had picked last week: Azure. Skye. She signed it and handed it over. "Now go home and lie down." Scarlett drove back with the paper on the seat beside her. Clayton was in the kitchen pouring coffee. She set the cedar box on the table and opened it. The rosemary. The blossom. The signed page with their children's names on a doctor's line. He read it twice, the way the doctor had read the chart. "We didn't celebrate," she said. "I didn't want it to pass." He set the page down. He pulled a chair beside hers instead of across. He put his hand flat on her belly. "Azure and Skye," he said. "Written down." "Written down." He went to the porch and carried in the top casserole, the one from the church woman. He heated two plates. They ate at the table with the box between them and the paper propped against the salt shaker. No visitors came for an hour. When Rose's truck finally turned up the drive, Scarlett closed the cedar box and slid it onto the shelf above the stove, where she could see it from the couch. The moment was theirs. It was kept.
