Seraphina's Arc

Chapter 1 of 4

Seraphina's wings pull hard to the left, dragging her shoulder forward like a rope gone taut. She steadies herself against the narrow alley wall and waits for the pull to fade. It doesn't. The direction is wrong — not toward the archives where the forbidden texts wait, but inward, deeper into the city itself. She follows the pull for three blocks, then five. Her wings tug her through a district she knows well — the textile quarter, where she once watched the keepers tear through workshop after workshop, searching for something they never named. The buildings here still show signs of it: doors that don't quite hang straight, locks replaced with newer brass. She stops at a storefront with a broken window, boarded over with planks. The pull intensifies. Inside, she finds the workshop floor swept clean, shelves emptied, everything stripped away. But in the corner, wedged behind a support beam, something catches the light. An amulet, brass and silver, with exposed clockwork gears still ticking. The keepers missed it. She picks it up, turns it over. The gears spin without purpose, pointing nowhere. Her wings go still.
