Chapter 1

Seraphina's wings pull hard to the left, dragging her shoulder forward like a rope gone taut. She steadies herself against the narrow alley wall and waits for the pull to fade. It doesn't. The direction is wrong — not toward the archives where the forbidden texts wait, but inward, deeper into the city itself. She follows the pull for three blocks, then five. Her wings tug her through a district she knows well — the textile quarter, where she once watched the keepers tear through workshop after workshop, searching for something they never named. The buildings here still show signs of it: doors that don't quite hang straight, locks replaced with newer brass. She stops at a storefront with a broken window, boarded over with planks. The pull intensifies. Inside, she finds the workshop floor swept clean, shelves emptied, everything stripped away. But in the corner, wedged behind a support beam, something catches the light. An amulet, brass and silver, with exposed clockwork gears still ticking. The keepers missed it. She picks it up, turns it over. The gears spin without purpose, pointing nowhere. Her wings go still.

Chapter 2

The amulet ticks in her pocket, warm against her ribs, as Seraphina winds through the alleys behind the textile quarter. She should head for the archives now. The pull has stopped, the workshop gave her what it had to give. But something keeps her moving through these narrow spaces between buildings, where the shadows pool thick and the keepers rarely bother to look. She turns a corner and stops. A woman stands in front of an old orphanage, three stories of peeling paint and broken windows that leans against the alley wall like it's too tired to stand straight. The woman wears keeper gray, but no insignia. No rank markers. Nothing to say who she is or who sent her. She doesn't move, doesn't speak. Just watches Seraphina with the kind of patience that says she's been waiting. Finally, she nods toward the orphanage door. "The archive you want," she says. "I can open it. Tonight, before the rotation changes. But you'll give me the amulet first." Seraphina's hand moves to her pocket, feels the clockwork gears still spinning. The keeper's eyes follow the movement. "You don't even know what it does," the woman says. "I do. And I know what you'll find in those texts. Fair trade." Seraphina weighs it. The amulet against the truth. She pulls it out, holds it up to the dim light. The gears catch and spin. She thinks about walking away, finding another path. But the keeper chose this place, this moment. Someone told her to be here. The same someone who called off the pursuit. Seraphina drops the amulet into the keeper's open palm. The woman closes her fingers around it and turns without another word. Seraphina watches her disappear into the orphanage, then out a far door. The trade is done. Tonight, she'll have the archive. But she's just armed someone else with a weapon she doesn't understand.

Chapter 3

Seraphina waits until midnight, then slips back to the orphanage. The door stands open like the keeper promised. Inside, the air smells like rot and old wood. She moves through the dark hallway, past rooms with empty beds and torn curtains. The archive should be in the basement. She finds it on the second floor instead. A massive wardrobe stands against the far wall of what used to be a dormitory, its carved doors already open. Through them, shelves stretch back impossibly far, lined with red spines that glow faint in the dark. She steps closer. Her wings snap forward so hard she gasps, yanked toward the wardrobe like iron to a magnet. The pull isn't like before — not a gentle tug through the city. This is violent. Hungry. She braces against the doorframe, but her wings drag her another step. Something inside that archive recognizes what she is. And whatever it knows, the keepers were right to seal it away.

Chapter 4

The pull drags her forward another step. Her wings strain toward the shelves, trembling with the effort of resisting. She can see the spines now, close enough to read — rows of red leather, each one stamped with gold script she doesn't recognize. The wardrobe groans. She grabs the nearest shelf edge and forces herself still. The groaning grows louder, rhythmic now — not wood settling but gears turning somewhere deep inside the walls. The archive is closing. She has seconds, maybe less. Her wings jerk toward a scroll on the middle shelf, tied with a mechanical seal that glows faint blue. She reaches for it, but the shelf pulls back, receding into impossible darkness. The wardrobe doors shudder inward. She lunges, catches the scroll's edge with two fingers, and yanks. The seal breaks with a bright snap. The doors slam shut so hard the floor shakes, and she's thrown backward onto the dusty boards, the scroll clutched against her chest. Silence. The wardrobe stands closed, ordinary wood again, no light bleeding through the cracks. She looks down at what she pulled free — aged parchment covered in diagrams of wings like hers, each one marked with notes in that same gold script. She can't read the words yet, but the drawings are clear enough. Her wings aren't natural. They were built.
