Chapter 24

Seren won the vote, but two gods had voted to strike her down. They knew tricks would not work now. They would come with force. She sat in her cave temple and counted her defenses. A hound at the door. A flame in the sky temple. A handful of devotees. None of it would stop two gods striking at once. She held a seat with no divine muscle bound to defend it. A single coordinated blow could topple her before she raised a hand. She needed guardians of her own. Not mortals. Beasts of power, bred to her holy ground. Her grey cat sat on the altar, tail curled, blue eyes steady. He was more than a pet now. He had carried the rite inside him once. Old magic ran deep in his blood. Seren stroked his fur. "You'll give me an army," she said. She called across the worlds for a mate worthy of him. On the third night a fox stepped from the shadows. Nine tails trailed behind it, each one shining a different color. Temple sigils glowed on its coat. It was a divine familiar, ancient and rare, the kind gods once kept to breed sacred beasts. It circled the cat, testing him. The cat did not flinch. He rose and met it. Seren bound the two with a willow cord and fed the binding her power. The fox denned in the cave through the turning of the moon. When it emerged, six kits followed. Each carried tails that sparked with color and eyes that saw the divine. They were guardian beasts, born of her cat and the temple fox, bound to her ground from birth. Seren felt them the moment they breathed. Each one thickened the shield around her seat. But six pups guarding two caves was not enough. She needed the beasts spread wide, and she needed hands to raise them. She flew to a weathered lodge on a high summit, a place built long ago for pilgrims. Wind scoured its old stone porch. Inside, travelers still came to rest. Seren stood in the doorway and drew back her cloak so they could see the pantheon seal stitched in purple and black lace. The mark of a seated god. "I am Seren Nightshade," she said. "Your goddess. This mountain is mine now." She set a guardian kit on the floor. It fanned its rainbow tails and the pilgrims gasped. "Serve me, and these beasts will guard you as you guard my seat." By dawn the lodge was a third temple. Pilgrims knelt. The kits patrolled its halls, sniffing out any divine scent that dared approach. Seren stood on the porch and felt the change settle into her bones. She no longer held a bare seat. She held three grounds, a breeding line of divine guardians, and worshippers ready to defend her. Let the two gods come. This time she would not stand alone.
