Chapter 25
Three temples stood as Seren's anchors now. The cave, the sky temple, the mountain lodge. But she could stand in only one at a time. Mica the seer sent word at dusk: both hostile gods had gone quiet. Quiet meant they were choosing their moment. When they struck, they would strike where she was not. Seren could not be in three places. She paced the cave, and the truth pressed on her. Guardians alone would not hold. She needed to be everywhere at once.
She knew the storm god who wanted her dead. Zephyr Stormbane. The pantheon had locked away his lightning, and he blamed the whole order for it. A god with a grudge and time to plan. He would test each temple, find the weak one, and take it. The second hostile god would strike the moment he did. Seren needed a way to answer both blows before her walls fell.
She worked through the night at her altar. She wove bands of light into a looping charm, feeding it her power. When she closed her hand around it, the cave dissolved and the mountain wind hit her face. The amulet moved her between temples in a breath. She had her answer. Speed, not numbers. But speed needed defenders who could hold each ground until she arrived.
She called two she trusted. Raph Inferna came first, fire threading through his long black hair, his eyes burning orange. He had planted her staff at the gods' door once, when she was only half a god. "You seat me for a fight," he said, grinning, "and finally give me one." She set him at the sky temple, near the eternal flame. Fire answered to him. Let the storm god try that ground.
Amber Crystallis arrived with her crystal-tipped staff, jaw set. A mortal, but one who had bled for Seren's shrines before. "Put me where they hit hardest," she said. "I'm not leaving." Seren sent her to the mountain lodge with two guardian kits and a white winged dog she bound to the porch. The beast fanned its wings and took its post at the door.
The strike came before dawn. Mica screamed in Seren's mind: sky temple. Seren gripped the amulet. The world tore and reformed. Zephyr's wind ripped at the eternal flame, but Raph stood in the doorway, fire roaring up his arms. Seren raised the black blade she had forged, its edges cracked with purple light. She drove the storm god back down the divine path. He fled, howling, before the blade could taste him.
She stood in the ruined doorway, breathing hard. Three temples, one blade, one amulet, two guardians who would die before they yielded. She could hold all three grounds now. But Zephyr had felt the godslayer's edge, and he would not come alone next time. He would bring the second god, and they would come for her, not her walls.
