Chapter 26

Zephyr would come back with the second god. Seren knew it in her bones. Two gods, three temples, one blade. If she chased one blow, the other would fall on an empty ground. She could not defend and attack at once. So she stopped trying to hold. She would make them come to one place and end it there. She chose the sky temple. It was strongest, and Zephyr hated it most. But she could not leave the other two grounds bare. She needed the sacred flames and relics gone before the gods struck, in case she failed and a temple fell. Her mind went to a crooked little cottage her ancestors had left to rot. No god had ever set foot there. It held no altar, no worshipper, nothing for them to sense. A blind spot. She would hide the temple's heart there. Seren gripped the amulet and teleported to the mountain lodge. There she found Sister Elara Brightwell kneeling at the shrine, a small book pressed to her chest. The village priestess had come on foot, days of walking in worn sandals, flowers still braided in her dark hair. "I heard a goddess needed hands she could trust," Elara said, rising. "Mine are steady." Seren had healed the sick in Elara's parish once, long ago, before any of this. The priestess bowed her head now not to a stranger but to the woman who had saved her people. Seren pressed the sacred flame and the lodge's relics into Elara's care. "Take them to the old cottage. No god can find you there. If I fall, you keep the faith alive." Elara gathered the holy things without a word and slipped into the dark. One ground emptied. Seren teleported again. At the sky temple she found Ganzy Brewster already stoking the eternal flame. The orange-haired demigod had smuggled gods past patrols for her before. He wiped his hands on his apron and grinned. "You always call me when the trouble's biggest." She set a triple-flamed torch in his hands, its three fires burning gold and violet. "This holds the door when I can't," she said. "Feed it and it will not die." Ganzy planted the torch at the threshold. The flames leaned toward the storm-heavy sky, ready. Then Seren drew out her last work. A dark chain, links heavy with rune-marks, blue lightning crawling along the iron. She had forged it in the night from storm-metal and binding words. One chain to hold two gods at once. She coiled it at her feet and waited. The sky split before dawn. Zephyr came down the wind, and behind him rode the second hostile god, cloaked in gray thunder. They struck the temple together, just as she'd known they would. Ganzy's torch flared and threw both gods back from the door. In that stagger, Seren whirled the chain. It sang through the air and wrapped Zephyr's arms. She twisted, and the loose end snaked out and bound the second god by the throat. The runes woke. Lightning that was theirs now answered her. They fought the chain and it only pulled tighter. Zephyr howled for his stolen storm and got none. Seren drew the black godslayer blade, its edges cracked with purple light. She walked the chain like a rope, hand over hand, until she stood between the two bound gods. "You voted to unmake me," she said. "You should have run." She drove the blade through the second god first. He came apart like smoke on the wind. Then she turned, and Zephyr met her eyes, and she cut him down too. The chain dropped, empty, its lightning gone quiet. Silence fell over the temple. Ganzy lowered the torch. From the mountain, Mica's voice touched Seren's mind, small and clear: the last two enemies are gone. No god still seated would move against her now. The pantheon had been told, plainly, what it cost to challenge her throne. Seren recalled Elara from the hidden cottage, and the sacred flame returned to the lodge. Three temples stood whole, their fires bright, their guardians at the doors. She climbed to her obsidian seat in the cave, and this time no cold pull dragged at the stone. Hank curled at her feet, tail wrapped over his nose. Seren Nightshade, once a witch with a purple mohawk and a book of her mother's secrets, sat as a goddess whom no one could unmake. The throne was hers, and it would stay hers. She had climbed from ash and fear to the divine record, and the pantheon had learned her name. She rested her hand on her cat and let the long war end.
