Chapter 1
Spike Thornley had slept in eleven towns that year, and none of them had asked him to stay. He set his shredded pack on the tavern floor and ordered a drink he could barely pay for. The leather jacket on his back was his fourth in twelve months. His spines had wrecked the other three. He was half-hedgehog, half-human, and he had spent his life chasing a stone his people lost two generations back. Steal the navigation stone, scatter the family, and this was what you got: a man with brown hair, pale blue eyes, and no place that knew his name. He kept moving because staying still had never worked. He wanted a home. More than that, he wanted someone to share it with.
The barkeep watched him drip mud on her clean floor. She had curly red hair and a tail she flicked once, slow. "You planning to pay for that seat, or just wear it out?" Ire Taverness asked. Her tone teased, but her green eyes did not.
"Passing through," Spike said. "Always passing through."
At that a man in dark cloth slid onto the stool beside him. Blue hair, lynx ears, orange eyes that missed nothing. Kael Shadowpaw set a folded map on the bar and pushed it toward Spike without a word first.
"You're the one asking about old relics," Kael said. Short, flat. "A stone that points the way somewhere."
Spike's hand stopped on his cup. "Who told you that."
"Everybody. You've asked in three regions." Kael tapped the map. "That's your problem. You keep moving, so nobody bothers to help you. A man who leaves tomorrow isn't worth a favor."
The words landed hard because they were true. Spike had begged for scraps of rumor in every town and gotten shrugs. People helped their own. He had never let himself become anyone's own.
Ire leaned on the bar between them. "He's right, hedgehog. Roots grow help. Drifters just grow calluses."
Spike looked at the map. It marked a cave east of here, and beside it, in Kael's cramped hand, a note: relics traded through Mosswood. A thread. A real one. But the note ended with a line that stopped his breath. Seller waits for buyers who live near. Won't deal with strangers passing.
"So I'm stuck," Spike said. "The one lead I've chased for years, and it needs the one thing I don't have. A place."
Kael stood. He softened, just slightly, the way a hard man does when something matters. "Ire keeps a loft upstairs. Rooms nobody's using." He looked at her. She gave the smallest nod.
"Prove you'll stay," Ire said. "Then Mosswood might tell you what it knows."
Spike set down his cup. For the first time in eleven towns, he did not reach for his pack. He reached for the map instead, and pulled it close.
"Then I'm not passing through," he said. "I'm staying."
