Chapter 2
By morning, Spike had a room and a problem. Ire had given him the loft on a promise, but a promise was cheap. She stood at the bottom of the stairs with her arms crossed, amber tail flicking. "Nice speech last night," she said. "Now show me it meant something. This town feeds people who work. What do you do?"
Spike had no answer that wasn't a lie. He had walked, begged, and moved on. He fixed his pack when it tore. He mended his own jackets after his spines wrecked them. That was all. "I get by," he said.
Ire's green eyes did not soften. "Getting by is drifter talk. The loft goes to someone who earns it. You've got no trade, no name, and nothing I can sell." She turned to leave. "Deal's off, hedgehog. Pack's still by the door."
The words hit like the map's had, hard and true. Spike stood in the empty tavern and felt the old pull to grab his bag and go. Instead he looked down. His jacket lining caught his eye. Reinforced fabric, flexible, sewn to hold against spines that shredded anything else. He had learned that stitch over four ruined coats. He knew it better than anyone alive.
He took the stairs two at a time and caught Ire in the doorway. "Your tavern's full of people who fight," he said. "Hunters. Trappers. Whoever Kael runs with. Their coats tear. Their gear splits." He held out his sleeve. "I make cloth that doesn't. I learned it the hard way, on my own back. Give me a week. I'll fix every torn thing in this room and stitch it stronger than new."
Ire stopped. She looked at the lining, then at his face. "You're serious."
"I've got nothing else," Spike said. "So yes."
A voice came from the corner. Kael sat there, quiet as always, sharpening a blade. He had come in without either of them hearing. "His work's good," Kael said, short and flat. "Look at the coat. Nothing catches on those spines. Took skill to do that." He set the blade down. "My gear splits every job. Fix it and I'll pay."
Ire glanced between the two men. Something shifted in her jaw. "One week," she said. "You mend Kael's kit and three more. They talk. If the town wants your needle, the loft's yours." She flicked her tail once. "If not, you walk."
Spike let out a breath he'd held all morning. "Deal."
By dusk, torn coats hung over every chair. Spike sat with a needle and heavy thread, working the first seam. His hands moved sure. For the first time, a town had a reason to keep him. The stone was still lost. But now he had a week to become someone Mosswood would help find it.
