Chapter 1

Tamarie kept her hands steady on the deckrail while the shark-kin gathered behind her. She knew what was coming before anyone spoke. The silence had changed — not the watchful kind she'd earned through careful work, but the kind that came before a test. One of them stepped forward. His voice carried across the deck toward the wooden platform where the crew gathered for ceremonies. "Prove it," he said. "Show us this dragon blood you claim, or admit you're just another cat playing in puddles." The others shifted closer. Tamarie turned from the rail and met his eyes. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in private, but now her hands were steady and her voice came out calm. "The platform," she said. "Bring water. I'll show you." They hauled barrels up from below and poured them across the platform's surface until shallow pools formed between the boards. Tamarie stepped up onto the worn wood. The crew circled close, arms crossed, waiting. She knelt and pressed both palms flat against the water. It responded before she even pulled — rising in columns that twisted and braided together, salt separating from fresh in clean spirals. The brackish water split into layers, each one spinning at a different speed, and she held them there without strain. The shark-kin who'd challenged her took a step back. His mouth opened, then closed. The young rigger who always watched her work moved closer to the platform's edge, and this time he didn't look away when she glanced up. The water settled back into stillness. No one spoke, but the silence had changed again — and this time, it belonged to her. She reached beneath her collar and pulled out the amulet her grandmother had given her — bone carved with old runes, green-stained and ancient. She held it up so the crew could see. "Old blood," she said. "Not rumor." The challenger stared at the amulet, then at the platform still dripping with separated water. He gave a single nod. The others followed. When she walked down from the platform, they parted to let her through. The captain stood at the stern rail watching, his face blank as always. But the rigger caught her eye and nodded once, deliberate and certain. That was enough for now.
