Chapter 2

The captain summoned her before dawn. When Tamarie climbed to the stern deck, the whole crew was already there, lined up along the rails. He stood at the wheel with his arms crossed, face still as stone. "You did a trick on stable wood," he said. "Now do it out there." He pointed past the bow toward open water where a lagoon stretched into the distance, its surface dotted with lily pads and moss-covered rocks. "If you can't hold it on the waves, you're off at the next port." Near the mast, a cracked bronze bell hung from a driftwood post — the ship's exile marker. Every sailor who'd been cast out had heard it ring as they were rowed away. Tamarie took the small boat they lowered for her and rowed toward the lagoon. The waves rocked beneath her, nothing like the platform's stillness. She knelt in the hull and pressed her palms into the salt water pooling at her feet. The ocean answered — columns rising higher than before, spiraling clean and sure even as the boat pitched. She split the water into three streams, then five, holding each one steady while the crew watched from the deck. But the lagoon's deeper currents pulled differently than harbor water. One spiral wavered, then collapsed. Salt water splashed across her face. She tasted failure on her tongue. She clenched her jaw and pulled harder. The water rose again, this time in a single massive column that held steady despite the waves. She kept it there for ten breaths, then twenty, separating salt from fresh in layers so clear she could see through them. Her arms shook. Her chest burned. But the column didn't falter. When she finally let it fall, the boat rocked hard and spray soaked her shirt. The captain stood at the wooden overlook above the wheel where he could see everything. She met his eyes across the water and waited. He turned away from the rail and walked below deck without a word. Tamarie rowed back in silence, her hands cramping on the oars. But when she climbed aboard, the rigger stepped forward and took the rope from her hands without being asked. The shark-kin who'd challenged her yesterday nodded once, deliberate and certain. The silence that followed wasn't mockery or doubt — it was acceptance. She'd failed once and recovered. That mattered more than perfection. The captain's silence still stung, but she understood now that the crew's respect didn't require his permission. She had proven herself to the ones who worked beside her, and that would have to be enough.
