Chapter 1

The Architect needed one child's soul, and a rival was poisoning children faster than the Architect could search. The Architect, a towering hooded figure who shaped the world, bent low over a village choked in snow. Somewhere among these children slept the soul prophecy demanded. The Architect had to find that soul and forge its owner into the hero who would meet the coming dark. But the rival power had already begun its work. It crept into young minds while they dreamed, turning warmth to cruelty. Every hour, another child darkened. If the true soul darkened first, the realm would fall. The Architect walked unseen through the village. A great pine stood at its heart, its hollow trunk glowing, its branches humming a low welcome song. Children gathered beneath the tree for shelter. The Architect lifted the glowing amulet from beneath the hood. The amulet showed a bright leaf wrapped in light. It would shine near the one true soul and stay dark near the rest. The Architect held it over each sleeping child. Dark. Dark. Dark. The rival's rot had reached most of them already. Their small faces twitched with borrowed hatred. Then the amulet flared green. A boy slept against the pine's roots, his breath steady, his face still clean. The Architect knelt. The rival's shadow already pooled at the boy's feet, climbing his blanket like black water. The Architect had moments, not hours. The Architect could not simply lift the boy away. The rot followed souls, not places. To break the corruption's hold, the Architect needed living strength the rival could not touch. The pine hummed louder, understanding. Its branches trembled. From the snow burst a pack of winged badgers, white and ice-blue, their broad wings beating cold air. They had nested in the guardian tree for ages. Now they answered its song. The Architect pressed the glowing amulet to the boy's chest. "Hold him," the Architect said. The badgers circled, their wings stirring a bright wind. The amulet's light poured into the boy. The rival's shadow hissed and pulled back, clawing at the glow. The badgers dove, biting at the dark, driving it from the boy's skin. The shadow thinned. It snapped once toward the amulet, then fled across the snow and vanished. The boy woke. He looked up at the towering hood without fear. The amulet still glowed green against his chest. The true soul was found, and it was clean. The Architect had won the child before the rival could claim him. But the shadow had not died. It had only run. And now it knew the boy's face. The Architect lifted the child and carried him toward the frosted inn glowing at the village edge, where a warm hearth waited. The hunt was over. The protecting had just begun. The rival would come for the boy again, and next time it would bring more than shadows.
