Chapter 2

The inn's hearth had warmed the boy, but warmth was not safety. The Architect felt the rival's shadow stirring beyond the snow, gathering again, hungry for the child's face it now knew. A hearth could burn out. Walls could fall. The Architect needed a door the rival could not follow through. So the god carried the sleeping boy from the village, past frozen fields, to a place where few mortals ever came. At the end of a buried trail stood an old cave mouth, its stone arch carved with runes and worn thresholds. Moss filled the cracks. A mural in the rock showed shapes the Architect had set there ages ago, before mortals could read them. This was a crossing, and a crossing needed a keeper. The Architect lowered the boy and waited. A barrel-chested woman stepped from the dark under the arch. Her head was shaved, her coat patched with fur. A ring of glowing keys swayed at her hip. She was Duna Ashwick, keeper of the crossing between worlds, and she turned away all she did not trust. She looked at the towering hood without flinching. "You made these doors," she said. "You still knock." "Some doors open only to a mortal hand," the Architect said. "I ask you to open one. This boy cannot stay in his world. The dark knows his face." Duna knelt by the child. She touched his cheek, then his chest, where the amulet's green glow had faded to a warm ember. "He's clean," she said. "The rot didn't take." She stood. "But a clean soul draws the dark harder. You know that." "I know it," the Architect said. "That is why I came to you." A second figure waited at the tree line, broad-shouldered, a gunmetal mask under a torn hood. The Wanderer had walked through a dying world and kept notes as it fell. A debt had sent him toward this cave, toward a vault people claimed could mend what was broken. He had not believed them. He stepped closer and looked at the boy. "That one's hunted," the Wanderer said. It was not a question. "Yes," the Architect said. "He needs a guard with mortal hands. I cannot fight this war for him." The Wanderer was silent. Then he said one flat line. "I've buried children. I won't bury this one." Duna lifted a single key from the ring. She knew it by feel alone. The key fit a lock in the carved arch, and the dark inside the cave thinned to pale light. "Through here, the shadow can't track him," she said. "Not while I hold the door." The Architect carried the boy across the threshold. Behind them, the snow at the tree line went black, then still. The rival had reached the village and found an empty hearth. The boy was safe now, hidden in the Realm Between Realms. But a guarded door is only safe while someone holds the key.
