Chapter 4

Thistle stepped through the root door and the world went dark. The tangled roots closed behind him. A faint silver-blue glow rose from below, lighting a passage of moss and old wood. He climbed down into it, staff first. Warm air pushed past his face like slow breathing. This was inside the heart itself. He had come to teach it to wake. But he had never soothed a frightened thing in his life, and he had no idea what to say. The passage opened into a round hollow. In the center pulsed a soft light, dim and shivering, like a small animal curled tight. It was the heart. When Thistle's boot scraped the floor, the light flinched. The whole hollow shook. Dust fell from above. He froze. One wrong word, one wrong step, and he would frighten it deeper into sleep. Thistle knelt. He set his staff down slowly. He opened his mouth to speak, then stopped. He didn't know the words. So he said nothing. Instead he took his gathering pouch and drew out a single mist-flower. Its glow was faint and gentle. He held it low, near the trembling light, and breathed on it. "There," he whispered. "Just this. Just a little." The heart pulled back. The light dimmed further. Thistle's chest tightened. He was doing it wrong. He was scaring it worse. Then a soft silver light slid down the passage behind him. Astra stepped into the hollow, her long hair floating, her crystal shoes silent on the moss. She was the moon girl who had found him at the willow, the one who taught him to wake the heart slowly. She had followed him down. She did not touch the heart. She looked at Thistle and smiled, small and sure. "You are still shouting," she said gently. "Not with your voice. With your fear. It feels you being afraid, so it stays afraid." Thistle swallowed. "How do I stop being afraid?" "Give it something it already knows." She knelt beside him. "Hum. The way the wind hums through the trees at night. It has heard that sound for a thousand years." Thistle closed his eyes. He thought of the forest above, the wind in the high branches. He began to hum, low and slow, the way the canopy sang on quiet nights. His fear loosened. The mist-flower brightened in his hand. The heart's light stopped shivering. Slowly, it reached toward the flower. It drank the soft glow, one gentle sip. The pulse steadied. The hollow grew warm and still. Thistle kept humming, and the heart glowed brighter, calmer, awake enough to listen. Astra rose. "It trusts you now. But one flower only softened its fear. To fully wake it, you must feed it all of them, one by one, without stopping." Her smile faded. "And if your fear returns even once, it will slam shut and never open again."
