Chapter 5

Thistle kept humming. He fed the heart another flower, then another. Each time, the trembling light drank the soft glow and steadied. But his pouch grew light. He reached in and felt only three flowers left. The heart pulsed brighter, yet it still curled inward, half asleep. Something was missing. He offered a fourth flower. The heart sipped, then stopped. It did not open. His fingers found his little book near his knee. He turned the pages fast, searching for the waking spell. He found it and whispered the words over the light. Nothing changed. He said them again, louder. The heart flinched. The hollow shook. He had two flowers left now, and no more words to try. "Slower," Astra said behind him. The moon girl knelt at his side, her long silver hair drifting in the warm air. She had followed him into the heart to teach him. Now she watched him fumble. "The spell is right. You are not full enough to power it." "Full of what?" Thistle asked. He fed the heart the next flower. Only one remained. His hands began to sweat. Astra reached into the passage shadow. The small silver fox padded out, the one that first led him to the willow. Its huge tail faded to mist at the tip. It sat calmly beside the trembling light. Astra plucked a single strand of silver hair from its coat. The fox did not flinch. "Hold this in your hand with the last flower," she said. She pressed the hair into his palm. "The fox carries the forest's own trust. But the hair is not enough alone." She looked straight at him. "When you say the spell, you must be full of love. Not fear. Not effort. Love for this frightened, sleeping thing." Thistle closed his fingers around the fox hair and the last flower. He stopped rushing. He thought of the forest above, the dark canopy, the small light waiting a thousand years for someone gentle. His chest warmed. The fear drained out of him. In its place came something soft and steady. He held his hand low to the light. He spoke the waking spell slowly, and this time he meant every word with his whole heart. The fox hair glowed silver. The flower flared. The heart reached up and drank all of it at once. Light bloomed through the hollow. The trembling stopped. The heart uncurled, wide and calm, glowing full and warm. It was awake. It knew him now. Thistle laughed, weak with relief. Then the light surged past the chamber walls. It poured up through the roots, up through the willow, out into MistVale above. The whole forest began to stir. Astra's smile faded. "You woke its heart," she said quietly. "Now the forest itself is waking. And it does not yet know friend from harm." The roots overhead groaned and began to move.
