Chapter 1

Thorgrim Frostborne could not open his sword hand. The blade had frozen into his fingers three days ago, and now the frost was climbing. It reached his wrist by the first night. His elbow by the second. This morning he watched pale crystal spread past his shoulder, and he knew the truth. The sword was eating him. He had carried it out of a buried tomb to learn where it came from and what power slept inside it. Instead it was killing him, one inch at a time. He stumbled through the snow toward the only light on the ridge. Behind him, his hawk circled, its frost-brushed wings cutting the wind. The bird would not land. It sensed the wrong thing in his arm. The light came from a low fire outside a tangle of frozen crystal vines. A small figure sat beside it. Elara Nivareth did not look up when he fell to his knees. Her white hair spilled over a snowflake-marked cloak. Elves like her had been driven out of the halls years ago for the magic she now practiced alone in the cold. "You should have cut it off at the wrist," she said. "Two days ago. Now it's too late for the easy way." "You know what this is." His voice cracked. "I know what it is." She rose and gripped his frozen arm without flinching. "A frost curse. The blade doesn't serve you. It's trying to make you part of itself. Ice all the way through." Her blue eyes found his. "Where did you dig it up?" "A tomb under the ice." He shuddered. "Can you stop it?" "I can't stop it. You can." She pressed his crystal fingers hard against the sword's hilt. "You've been fighting the blade. That's why it's winning. It feeds on struggle. You have to take command instead. Speak to it like it's yours." "It isn't mine." "Then you die tonight." The frost reached his collarbone. Cold crawled toward his heart. Thorgrim stopped pulling away. He closed his eyes and reached into the sword the way she said, not fighting, but claiming. He felt something vast and old push back. He pushed harder. He named the blade his own. The frost stopped. Then it reversed. Crystal retreated down his chest, his shoulder, his arm, until only his sword hand stayed sheathed in cold. The blade glowed a deep, steady blue. For the first time, it obeyed him. Elara stepped back, and her face had changed. Not relief. Fear. "You didn't just stop the curse," she said quietly. "You woke it. That tomb you robbed had a keeper. It will feel this. It will come for the sword." She looked at the dark horizon. "And now it knows exactly where you are."
