Chapter 10

Thorgrim knelt by the anvil. The maker's mark stared up from the iron. Elara's grandmother had cut it. The old woman had left an answer somewhere, a way to stop what she started. But the vision had not shown where. The frost had reached his elbow. His whole arm was blue and stiff. He had a name and no place to point it. "Your grandmother," he said. "She sealed the storm here. Then she left. Where would she hide the cure?" Elara pressed her wrapped palm to the anvil. She had cut that palm herself to break the sword's spell. She feared its full power more than she feared the curse killing him. Yet she stayed. Her people forged this blade. She would not walk away from the mess her blood carried. "She never spoke of a cure," Elara said. "Only that she paid for it. She said the village would remember what we did." Her eyes went wide. "The village. The one the storm froze. She went back there. She said the dead held the account." Thorgrim's hawk lifted its head. The bird had flown these passes his whole life. "You know the ruins," he told it. The hawk shook loose snow from its wing and hopped to his shoulder. They climbed from the forge. The frozen village lay a hard walk across the ridge. Wind cut through Thorgrim's ragged cloak. His dead arm swung useless at his side. When they reached the ruins, ice sheeted every wall. Broken homes stood open to the sky. Snow filled the streets where people once walked. Elara moved through the wreckage. She stopped at a house with a lantern still hung by the door. "She always marked her work," Elara said. She dug at the frost on the doorframe. A small carving showed under the ice, the same mark from the anvil. Inside, the floor had buckled. Thorgrim kicked through frozen boards with his good arm. Beneath a cracked slab lay a bundle wrapped in oiled hide. He dragged it out. The wrap held an old scabbard, dark with age. A stone sat at its center, blue and threaded with pale lightning. "The lock was never the whole cure," Elara said. She touched the stone. It hummed under her fingers. "This holds the other half. A way to draw the storm out of a person, not seal it." She looked at his frozen arm. "The curse in you is the storm's cold. This can pull it." Thorgrim gripped the scabbard. The frost had climbed above his elbow. His shoulder ached with new cold. He did not know how to use the thing. But he held it, and for the first time the answer had weight in his hand. "Then we learn how it works," he said. "Before it reaches my heart."
