Chapter 7

The blade still glowed in Thorgrim's fist. Its cry faded to a low hum. Above him, the keeper leaned against the fire's edge and groaned. He lowered the sword to the anvil and looked at Elara. She stood against the crystal bush, her cut palm pressed to her chest. "Your people split this storm," he said. "I need to know why. If I don't understand that, I can't tell if I can ever tame it." Elara did not move. "You saw a village frozen in one night. That was half." "Half a storm still froze it. So why cut the power at all? Why not seal the whole thing and be done?" He set his palm flat on the cold iron. "There's a reason you don't want to say." Her jaw tightened. She crossed to the fire pit and knelt by it, close to the light. "Because my people didn't seal it to protect anyone. They meant to use it. Two halves. One blade for freezing. One for something else." She swallowed. "A door. My grandmother built the keeper. She bound it to guard the tomb. The second half of the storm was the key made to open the way back to it." Thorgrim's hand went still on the anvil. "So the sword was never a weapon." "It was a lock and a key, forged as one. The freezing half hides the truth. Pour my blood, and you don't wake a storm. You turn the key. The keeper walks free and takes the blade home. And you with it." He understood now. He had spent chapters chasing power he thought would save him. There was no buried weapon to unleash. The sealed half was a leash, and it pointed the wrong way. "Then it can't be disarmed by finishing it," he said. "Finishing it arms the thing on the stairs." "Yes." She met his eyes. "You wanted a sword. You carry a chain." His hawk stirred on the anvil, feathers dull, one blue eye open. Frost trailed from its wing across the iron. Thorgrim watched the thin line of ice creep toward the drop of dried blood. An idea moved in him, cold and clear. The bird's magic had recharged the bush. Its frost was the same magic the forge had used. He wiped the blood from the anvil with his sleeve before the keeper could taste more. "The key needs your blood," he said slowly. "But a key only works if the lock still holds." He looked at the anvil, the fire, the frozen bush. "What if we break the lock instead of turning it?" Elara stared at him. For the first time she did not look afraid. "Break it," she whispered, "and the keeper has nothing to walk through." Above them, the keeper went quiet. It had heard. And it was no longer sure of its prize.
