Chapter 1

Rook Rael had guarded the sealed door for nineteen years, and he had never once used the spear in his hands. He was chosen at birth for this post. The elders wrapped him in ritual cloth, fitted the cracked visor to his eyes, and taught him only one thing: stand, and do not leave. Now the door shook in its frame. Something behind it wanted out, and Rook realized he did not know how to fight. The obsidian spear felt wrong in his grip. He had polished it a thousand times. He had never thrust it at anything. His arms shook when he tried a practice swing, and the blade dipped low. A child could disarm him. Whatever waited behind the door would not be a child. It was the ancient threat the door was built to hold. Defeating it was supposed to be his sacred purpose. He could barely raise his weapon. He pressed his palm to the cold stone. "I can't do this," he said. "I don't know how." The ink-marks carved along the door began to glow. Then they moved. A wolf shape pulled itself from the stone, gray fur streaked with black patterns, yellow eyes fixed on Rook. Beside it a great tusked shape formed, an elephant marked with dark stains, tall enough to fill the corridor. Rook stumbled back and lifted the useless spear. Neither beast attacked. From between them darted a tiny thing, a hummingbird patterned like spilled ink, wings a blur. It hovered before his visor. When it spoke, the voice came from inside his own skull. "We are the guardians bound to this door," the hummingbird said. "You were never meant to fight alone. You were meant to carry us." "Carry you how?" Rook asked. "Open your hands." Rook did not understand, but the door boomed again and cracked down its center. He had no time to doubt. He dropped the spear and spread his arms. The hummingbird flew straight into his chest. Heat rushed through him. His shaking stopped. His spine straightened on its own. He felt the wolf's speed and the elephant's weight settle into his limbs like water filling a jar. His hands, which could not hold a spear a moment ago, closed into steady fists. The visor cleared. For the first time he saw the corridor sharp and whole. Rook picked up the spear again. It sat right in his grip now. He tested a swing, and the blade cut clean and fast through the air. The skill was not his. It belonged to the spirits inside him. But his arm carried it. The door split open. Cold air poured out, and a shape moved in the dark beyond. Rook did not run. He set his feet the way he had stood for nineteen years, and this time he was ready to meet what came through.
