Chapter 2

The shape from the door did not stop to fight. It slid past Rook in a rush of cold air and vanished into the black tunnel beyond. Rook lunged after it. His spear cut only empty dark. He had no torch, no map, no trail. Nineteen years he had guarded this door, and he had never once looked at what lay behind it. "It's gone," Rook said. His voice echoed and died. "I can't see. I don't know these tunnels." The hummingbird stirred in his chest. "Then use the wolf's nose. Stop looking. Breathe." Rook shut his eyes. He drew a slow breath. The wolf's sense woke behind his face. The dark filled with scents he could suddenly name. Wet stone. Old dust. And under it, a sharp cold trail, like frost dragged across metal. The thing had passed here. He ran. The tunnel dropped and twisted. The panther's grace moved his feet over loose rock without a sound. Twice the trail split, and twice his nose chose the colder path. He passed a mushroom glowing faint orange on the wall, its cap dotted with dark spots. Its weak light showed him claw marks fresh in the mud. He was close. The tunnel opened into a wide cavern. A dark tree grew from the stone floor, its bark split into black panels, its canopy pressing the ceiling. The cold trail wrapped around its roots. Rook slowed and raised his spear. Something huge shifted in the shadow behind the tree. Not the thing he chased. Bigger. A bison stepped into the mushroom light. Jagged scars split its hide, and blue light crawled along the cracks like lightning under skin. Its white eyes fixed on Rook. It lowered its horns and pawed the stone. Rook understood too late. The thing from the door had run here on purpose. It had led him to a guardian of its own. The bison charged. Rook felt the elephant's weight drop into his legs. He held his ground until the last breath, then twisted aside. The horns grazed his wraps. He drove the obsidian spear down into the beast's shoulder, into one of the glowing scars. Blue light burst out. The bison screamed and crashed into the tree. The trunk split further and the canopy shook. The beast did not rise. Its white eyes dimmed. The lightning under its hide faded to nothing. Rook stood over it, breathing hard. His hands were steady. He had tracked a thing in the dark and killed for the first time in his life. But when he lifted his eyes, the cold trail was gone. The thing from the door had used the fight to slip away. Beyond the fallen tree, three tunnels split off into deeper dark, and every one of them smelled of frost. He had won the fight. He had lost the trail. And now the dark offered him three paths instead of one.
