Tom Nook stood at his shop window, watching the tailor's customers cross the street with their wrapped parcels. Each one represented coin that should have been his. He was building an empire, one acquisition at a time, and the tailor two streets over was the biggest obstacle in his path. The vacant lot beside the tailor's shop had sat empty for years, just an old well choked with vines and moss. Now a wooden sign proclaimed it was for sale. Tom Nook had already sent his bid to the town clerk that morning. But when he walked past at noon, he spotted fresh boot prints in the mud around the well and a second envelope being delivered to the clerk's office. Someone else wanted that property, and Tom Nook didn't need three guesses to know who. The tailor would see that lot as protection, a buffer against competition. Tom Nook saw it differently: whoever controlled that space controlled the tailor's future, and he refused to let his greatest rival dictate terms. He returned to his shop and pulled out his ledger. The tailor's bid would be conservative, careful, based on what the property was worth today. Tom Nook wrote a new number, one that would make the clerk's eyes widen. It would hurt his reserves, but pain was temporary. He drafted the bid on official parchment, the kind with decorative borders and formal language that carried weight. The elaborate scroll made his offer look as serious as the number written on it. He sealed the envelope and walked it to the clerk's office himself. By evening, the answer came back. The property was his. Tom Nook carried his shop sign to the vacant lot and planted it beside the moss-covered stones of the well. The wooden posts sank into soft earth with satisfying thuds. He stepped back and looked at his work. Tomorrow morning, the tailor would open his door and see those bold letters staking their claim. The buffer his rival wanted had become a weapon pointed directly at him. Tom Nook's empire had just grown by one strategic piece, and the tailor's protection had vanished overnight.
