Three days after Tom Nook planted his sign, two officials from the town registry arrived at the vacant lot. They carried leather folders and wore expressions that suggested trouble. Tom Nook met them at the property line, keeping his face neutral while his mind calculated angles. The officials set up a wooden table near the overgrown well and spread their documents across its surface. Their miniature roadster sat parked at the edge of the lot, gleaming white against the muddy ground. The shorter official pulled out a second sign, identical to Tom Nook's, but stamped with the town seal. He drove it into the earth beside Tom Nook's marker without asking permission. The taller one looked up from his papers and said the deed had irregularities. Someone had filed a counter-claim questioning the original survey boundaries. The lot might belong to the adjacent property owner. They meant the tailor. Tom Nook asked how much it would cost to resolve the irregularities quickly. The shorter official's eyes flickered with recognition. He named a figure that would empty what remained of Tom Nook's reserves after the bid. The taller one added that the review could take months otherwise, maybe longer if the counter-claim gained support. Tom Nook understood the game immediately. This wasn't about boundaries or surveys. This was about someone paying the right people to make his victory expensive enough to hurt. He agreed to the fee and watched them pack their table and documents. They took their sign with them when they left. By evening, Tom Nook had paid the registry and secured the deed without contest. But his reserves were gone now, completely drained. He stood beside his sign and looked at the tailor's shop. His rival had just taught him something valuable: ownership meant nothing if you couldn't defend it, and defense always had a price. Tom Nook had won the lot, but the cost had stripped him of the resources he needed for his next move. His empire had grown by one piece of land, but his ability to expand further had frozen solid. He would need to rebuild his funds before he could strike again, and that meant waiting while his rival recovered ground.
