Chapter 3

Tom Nook spent three days watching the tailor's shop through his window, calculating how long it would take to rebuild what the officials had taken. His funds were empty. His expansion plans were frozen. His rival had turned his victory into a cage. On the fourth morning, a merchant Tom Nook recognized from the docks set up a lemonade stand across from his shop. The stand was bright yellow with striped awnings, cheerful in a way that didn't match the merchant's nervous eyes. The man waved Tom Nook over and offered him a cup. Tom Nook ignored it and waited. The merchant said he'd heard about the lot, about the officials, about the empty reserves. He said he had a shipment coming in that needed quick sale, goods that would triple Tom Nook's money in two weeks if he fronted the capital. The catch was simple: the goods weren't exactly legal, and if the town watch found them, Tom Nook's shop would be the one carrying the blame. Tom Nook looked at the tailor's window, then back at the merchant. He asked how much capital was needed. The merchant named a figure Tom Nook could scrape together if he sold his current inventory at a loss. Tom Nook considered it for exactly ten seconds, then walked back inside his shop. The merchant's offer would rebuild his funds fast, but it would also give his rivals a weapon they could use to destroy him completely. He'd learned that ownership without defense meant nothing. This deal would hand the tailor a blade and invite him to strike. Tom Nook watched the merchant pack up his stand an hour later. His funds were still empty, but he'd made a choice that closed a door he couldn't reopen. He would rebuild slowly, carefully, without giving anyone ammunition to use against him. It would take longer. It would hurt more. But he would control every step, and no one would have the leverage to take it away. The merchant loaded his stand onto a cart, then turned back one last time and placed a stack of money on the ground between them, crisp bills bound with string. Take it now or leave it forever, the merchant said. Tom Nook stared at the money, calculating what it could buy him and what it would cost. Then he turned his back and locked his shop door. When he looked outside again, the merchant and the money were both gone. Tom Nook had chosen patience over speed, control over risk. His empire would grow on his terms, not on borrowed danger that could collapse everything he'd built.
