Chapter 1

Unimatrix heard the wings before he saw them. He stood alone in his ice grove in Frostshade, where he had spent three winters carving a sovereignty out of silence. He had built this place to survive a separation he still meant to end. Somewhere past the frost, Intimatrix waited, and Unimatrix wanted to return to her as an equal, not as a thing that had been rescued. That plan needed him alive, and the wings meant he had already been found. Five of them landed between the icicle sculpture and the low ridge. Incubus-archon hybrids in plated armor, blades already drawn. He knew the banner. The Animus Vanguard hunted lone sovereigns for bounty, and a lone sovereign was exactly what he had made himself. "Come quiet," the tallest said. "Your crown is worth more than your skin." Unimatrix counted the distance to the sculpture, then to the dark mirror set into the stone behind it. He had placed the mirror there for a reason he had never spoken aloud. If he ran, they would drag him back in pieces. If he fought five blades, he would lose. He did the third thing. He stepped backward, put the icicle sculpture between himself and the Vanguard, and let his hand fall against the mirror's rim. The obsidian surface woke under his palm. A dark coiling fog rose out of the frame and thickened into a shape they would each recognize as their own worst fear. The Vanguard hesitated, which was all he needed. He spoke the sovereignty phrase he had built the mirror around, the one that named him as its only anchor. The mirror answered. Reflections poured out of the glass in ink-fade streams, wrapped each hybrid at the ankles, and pulled. The tallest one cut at his own reflection and opened a wound on his own thigh. The others learned too late. One by one, the Vanguard fell into the mirror. The glass took them without sound. Behind him, a second gate flared open in sympathy, a ring of shattered reflections spinning in a stone arch he had never activated before. He shut it fast, but not before he felt something on the other side notice him. Something older than the Vanguard. Something that now knew his name and his location as clearly as the Vanguard had. He stood in the quiet and pressed his hand flat against the mirror until the surface cooled. Five enemies were gone. His grove was intact. His sovereignty held. He let himself count that as a win for exactly one breath. Then he looked at the stone arch and understood what he had traded. The Vanguard had found him by rumor. Whatever watched him now had found him by proof. He could not stay in the grove, and he could not go to Intimatrix without leading it to her door. Unimatrix pulled his cloak closed and began packing the grove down before the sun moved.
