Chapter 2

Unimatrix left the grove on foot. He carried what he could not leave behind and burned the rest. The mirror stayed where it stood, dark and quiet, but he could still feel the older thing on the other side of it, learning the shape of him. Every step across the frost felt like a stamped signature. He needed walls that did not answer to him, because anything tied to his name was a road drawn on a map. He walked until the trees thinned into stone. The Cryptic Codex Library rose out of a slope he had not seen from a distance. Green sigils crawled its face and pulsed under frost. He had traded favors with its keeper once, years ago. He had not gone back because going back meant owing more. Tonight he would owe more. The outer door opened before he touched it. Inside, the air hummed. Venomcodex waited on the tiles, small and armored, the crown on its head lit with cold green fire. Its yellow eyes fixed on him without blinking. The guardian did not step forward. It watched him the way it watched everything, measuring what he did when he thought he was only crossing a floor. "You are leaking," Venomcodex said. "Traces. Old fragments. Something upstream is reading them." Unimatrix set his pack down. He did not sit. "I need shelter. Not a debt lecture." "Shelter is the debt." "Then name it." Venomcodex tilted its head. "Silence. You do not reach for her from inside these walls. Not once." He felt the demand land in his chest. Intimatrix was the one string he had not cut cleanly. He had told himself distance was protection. Venomcodex was telling him distance was not enough while the leaks still ran. "Agreed," Unimatrix said. Venomcodex raised one small hand. Behind it, the floor split along a green seam, and something rose out of the channel beneath the library. Seven necks braided around a central coil. Each head mirrored the others, tongues flickering in the same rhythm. The Recursive Data Hydra tasted the air, then tasted him. "It eats what points back to you," Venomcodex said. "Corrupted trails. Cached echoes. Anything the watcher can follow." The hydra fanned out. One head dipped into a green channel in the floor and swallowed. Another struck sideways and swallowed again. Unimatrix felt something loosen behind his ribs, like a hook drawing free. He had not known how loud his own signal had been until it began to go quiet. When the hydra folded back into the seam, Venomcodex spoke without turning. "You are unreadable from outside these walls. For now." "And inside?" "Inside, I read you." The green eyes held. "Keep your promise about her, or the walls thin." Unimatrix picked up his pack. He had a roof. He had cost. He had a leash across the one road that led home.
