Chapter 16

The warriors dragged Severin through the gate. Vela stood on the flat rocks with Lysander, and the danger was gone. Her file was closed. Her name was safe. For the first time since she landed, no deadline pushed her forward. She should have felt light. Instead she felt lost. She had won Benbenek's heart with threats always looming. Now the threats were gone, and she had no idea how to simply sit with him. The next morning she climbed to the king's tower. Benbenek stood at the window, holding his globe. He set it down when she entered. "You came without news," he said. "That is new." "I came without a reason," Vela said. Her voice caught. "I don't know how to be here when nothing is burning." Benbenek studied her. "Then we will find a reason. Walk with me." He led her through the fungal forest, away from the gate. Vela kept waiting for an alarm, a spy, a threat. None came. The silence pressed on her. She reached for a plan and found nothing. A warm light glowed between the trees. A man sat on a mossy stone, horns curling from white hair, a small bottle cupped in his hands. Pink flame flickered inside the glass. Vela had seen him once at the edge of the market, a demon who lived where people did not go. He looked up and smiled, kind and lonely at once. "Two who found love," Heartwhisper said, "yet one still walks like a stranger to it." He tilted his head at Vela. "You guard a garden, then forget to sit in it." "I don't understand," Vela said. "You know how to fight for a heart." He rose. "You never learned to rest in one." He held out the bottle. "No potion for you. Yours is already true. But answer me. When there is no battle, what do you want from him?" The question stopped her. She turned to Benbenek. The forest was quiet. No timer, no spy, no doctor. Just the king, waiting. "I want to hear about your rocket," Vela said. "The one in the east yard. Not to use it. Just to know why you love it." Benbenek's face changed. The king dropped away, and only the man stood there. "My father built it," he said. "I sit in it and remember him." He took her hand. "No one has ever asked me that as a friend." They sat on the moss. Heartwhisper faded into the trees, smiling. Vela talked with Benbenek about small things, the moth he healed, the food he liked, his fear of the dark. She asked nothing for a mission. She learned him as a companion. When she rose to leave, Benbenek held her hand a moment longer. "Come tomorrow," he said. "Not as a guard. As yourself." Vela nodded. She knew how to stand beside him now. But Severin's warning stayed in her mind. Other enemies were coming, and this quiet would not last.
