Chapter 17
The next morning Vela came to court not as a guard, but as herself. She stood beside Benbenek's chair while the mushroom-folk filed in. Their eyes found her silver skin and slid away. A few whispered behind their hands. Benbenek reached for her, but Vela saw the truth. The king loved her. His court did not. To stand openly at his side, she had to win them too.
Asher waited near the door, mask pale over his face. Vela knew him as the quiet outsider who gave everything and got nothing back. He caught her eye and stepped close. "They looked at me the same way," he said. "For a year. A stranger stays a stranger until he does something they can't ignore."
"And what did you do?" Vela asked.
"Nothing." His voice was flat. "That was my mistake."
The warning came at midday. A runner burst in, breathless. Someone had struck at the far rocks where Severin once set his lab—an old ally, another blade for hire. Warriors had failed to break the line. The court turned to Benbenek. Some turned, too, to Vela, waiting to see if the outsider would run.
Vela did not run. "I'll go," she said. "Not for the king. For all of you."
Captain Pluto met her at the gate, his blue face grim under his cap. "I logged your love as sworn fact," he said. "Now log this fight where they can all watch. Trust is not spoken. It is seen."
Sun Wukong Azure was already walking toward the jagged rocks. Blue hair. Bluetooth shirt. He crossed the broken ground the way most men cross a doorway. Weapons lay scattered among the stones, left from old battles.
"How many?" Vela asked him.
"Enough," he said, and said no more.
They climbed the lab rocks together. The hired blades came from behind the stones. Vela freed her dogcat's collar-light and flung the beam into their eyes. Sun Wukong waded in, striking fast, saying nothing. Vela pulled a fallen spear from the rubble and held the line beside him. She fought where the court could see her from the wall.
When the last blade dropped his weapon, Vela stood on the rocks, chest heaving. The mushroom-folk on the wall had watched it all. She had bled for their kingdom in plain sight.
Back at the gate, the court did not slide their eyes away. An elder mushroom-folk bowed his head to her. Then another. Benbenek came down the steps and took her hand before them all. No one whispered.
"Now they see you," Benbenek said.
Asher stood at the edge, mask tilted her way. "You did what I never did," he said.
Vela had won the court. But Sun Wukong stood apart, staring at the rocks. "That one talked before he fell," he said. "Said the next one won't come alone." The threat was named. Peace still would not hold.
