Chapter 19

The morning after the fountain, Benbenek came to Vela's rocket. He wore his crown and a wide smile. "Tonight you meet my household," he said. "Not as a spy. Not as a guest. As my equal." He took her hand and led her toward the castle. Its towers glowed like starlight against the fungal forest. Vela had fought blades and jammers without flinching. But this made her stomach tighten. The great hall was full. Servants stood in rows. A flying deer drifted near the ceiling, small flames spilling from its mouth as it announced each name. On the far wall clung a mass of green faces, fused together, black eyes shining, pink tongues out. The mushroom-folk bowed and murmured. Vela knew none of the customs. When a servant offered a bow, she froze. Her hands hung at her sides. She did not know where to stand or what to say. Benbenek waited for her to speak to his people. Vela opened her mouth. Nothing came. She had a hundred cover stories for a hundred missions. She had no words for being wanted. The hall went quiet. The deer's flame guttered. Vela felt every eye. She was a liar with no lie left to hide behind. Then Lysander stepped from the crowd. The king's right hand, an outsider like her, the one ally who knew her secret. He wore his heart-crested armor and moved with easy calm. "Breathe," he said, low, only for her. "You don't have to perform. That's the whole trick." He turned to the hall. "She bled at the far rocks for you. Words come later." The court nodded. The pressure lifted. Scarlett Nightbloom drifted down beside them, wings pale in the castle light. She had cornered spies in the forest and destroyed a jammer to save Vela. Now she only smiled. "Just be strange," she whispered. "Strange got me this far." Vela laughed. It broke something loose in her chest. She faced the household. "I don't know your customs," she said. Her voice held. "I know your king. He healed a moth. He kept its wing. He talks to an old rocket when he thinks no one hears." Soft laughter ran through the hall. Benbenek's ears went red. "I came here to trick him. I stayed because I love him. That's the only truth I have." The household bowed, not to a spy, but to her. Benbenek pulled her close. "Now you belong," he said. But Lysander stayed at her side, and his voice dropped. "They came in through the front gate with me," he murmured. "I didn't check them all." He nodded at the green mass on the wall. The black eyes had turned. They were watching Vela, not the king. "Someone in this hall isn't a servant," Lysander said. "And now they've seen your face without the mask on." Vela had won the room. She had also filled it with strangers she could not name.
