Chapter 20
The infiltrator never showed. Days passed. The castle stayed quiet. Vela caught herself watching every servant's hands, every doorway, every shadow near the wall of fused green faces. She could guard Benbenek. She had done it a hundred times. But when he sat with her at supper and simply talked, she went stiff. She did not know how to be near him without a threat to name.
Benbenek noticed. One evening he set down his cup. "You watch the door more than you watch me," he said. His voice held no anger, only tiredness. "When the danger ends, will you still know how to stay?" Vela had no answer. He left the table. The space between them felt colder than any fight.
So she went to the cave few people find. Heartwhisper sat inside, horns dark against the stone, a potion glowing in one hand. He looked up before she spoke. His heart-shaped eyes held her. "You come armed," he said, "to a table with no enemy."
"I don't know how to put the armor down," Vela said.
Heartwhisper turned the potion slowly. "A guard counts the doors. A companion counts the quiet." He set the bottle on the ground. "Sit with a thing you cannot protect from. Then you will learn."
She did not understand. Sun Wukong Azure waited outside the cave, arms crossed, orange pants bright in the gloom. He had bled beside her at the far rocks. He said little, always. She told him what the demon said. Sun Wukong shrugged. "Do a small thing," he said. "Not a battle. A small thing." Then he closed the subject and looked away.
Vela walked back to the castle. She did not go to the wall of faces or the gate. She went to the east yard, where Benbenek kept his old rocket. He was there, one hand on the cold metal. He did not turn.
She sat down beside him on the ground. She said nothing about spies. She said nothing about the infiltrator. "Tell me about the first time you climbed inside it," she said.
Benbenek looked at her. His shoulders dropped. He began to talk. She listened. She did not scan the trees. When a flying deer drifted past, small flames spilling from its mouth, she did not reach for a weapon. She let it pass. The fear of losing him sat in her chest, and she did not fight it. She just stayed.
Benbenek reached for her hand. "You put it down," he said softly.
"I put it down," she said.
The stiffness between them broke. For the first time, being near him felt easy. Their bond held without a threat to hold it up.
Then Lysander appeared at the yard's edge. His face was hard. "The infiltrator moved," he said. "They didn't come for the king." He looked at Vela. "They went to your rocket. And it let them in."
