Chapter 24

The spy still would not name the three inside the walls. She had given Severin's name, but her jaw locked at the rest. "He owns my sleep," she whispered. "You can't buy that." Vela had nothing to offer against a fear that deep. Threats failed. Bribes failed. The woman feared Severin more than any cell. Vela needed to break his hold, not outbid it. Heartwhisper crouched by the bars again. He turned his cipher slow in his hand. "A leash only holds while the hand stays warm," he said softly. "Show her the hand is dead." He looked at Vela. "She thinks he watches through everyone. Prove one place he cannot reach." Vela understood. The spy believed Severin was everywhere. Break that belief in one spot, and the whole web loosened. But Vela could not shrink Severin. She could only make his reach look smaller than his fear. Heat rolled through the doorway. A blue lizard-figure stepped in, flames curling off his shoulders, tail dragging cold light. Pyros Coldscale. Sun Wukong Azure had brought him from the far rocks, where he burned enemy gear for the court. "Touch him," Sun Wukong told the spy, flat. "Go on." The woman pressed a shaking hand to the burning scales. She flinched back, then stared. The skin was cold. Fire above, ice beneath. "Fear lies," Pyros said. His voice came with a small blaze from his mouth, gone as fast. "What looks like it eats you cannot even warm your hand." Vela knelt. "That's Severin," she said. "Fire on the outside. Nothing left underneath. He sits in a cage. His threats are old smoke." She nodded at Pyros. "He burned Severin's own tools to ash this week. The doctor couldn't stop him. That's how far his hand reaches now." The spy looked at the cold flame. Something in her shoulders dropped. "He said he'd know the second I spoke," she said. "He said he always knows." "He doesn't," Vela said. "He's guessing. Like you're guessing now." The woman closed her eyes. Then she gave them. "The cook's boy. The seamstress who came last moon. And the guard at the tower stair." Her voice cracked. "The stair guard is the worst. He waits closest to the king." Vela stood, cold and sharp at once. Three names. A boy, a seamstress, a guard beside Benbenek's own tower. She had them. But the last one froze her. An armed man stood every night outside the king's door, trusted, close enough to strike while Benbenek slept. "Lock her ward. Feed her. She's ours now," Vela said. She turned for the door, Sun Wukong and Pyros falling in behind. The web had names at last. And one of those names guarded the man she loved.
