Chapter 25

Vela had the names. But names did not stop a knife at night. The stair guard waited closest to Benbenek, armed, trusted, while the king slept. Vela could not stand watch every hour herself. She had to sleep. She had to plan. And in those gaps, the guard could open the door. She needed a watch that never blinked and never tired. She called Pyros Coldscale to the tower stair. The blue lizard-figure came with flames curling off his shoulders, tail dragging cold light. Sun Wukong Azure had shown Vela his trick already. Fire above, ice beneath. "I need eyes that don't sleep," she told him. "Three traitors. One stands here every night." Pyros looked up the stair. "Fear is a fire," he said. Small flame slipped from his mouth. "So is a warning." He would take the stair post himself. No guard would dare pass a burning body. But that fixed one door. The cook's boy and the seamstress still moved free inside the walls. Vela chose to end all three at once, before any could run. She sent Sun Wukong for the cook's boy. She sent Scarlett for the seamstress. She took the stair herself, with Pyros at her back. If she moved on one, the others would flee. So all three had to fall in the same breath. At the top of the stair, the guard stood by the king's door. He saw Vela and reached for his blade. Pyros stepped past her. Heat rolled up the wall. The guard swung anyway. Vela caught his wrist and twisted. The blade rang on stone. Pyros pressed a burning hand to the man's chest. The guard felt the cold beneath the flame and froze, confused. He gave up. Below, Sun Wukong dragged the cook's boy up by the collar. Scarlett came behind, the seamstress bound at the wrists. Three traitors, taken in one night. The web inside the walls was cut. Vela knelt by the king's door. She had won the thing she needed. Benbenek could sleep now. No trusted hand waited to strike him in the dark. Then the stair guard spoke, breath shaking. "You think you've won." He laughed, thin and cold. "The doctor knew you'd find us. We were never the blade. We were the distraction." His eyes flicked to the tower door. "While you hunted us, the real one walked in. He's already inside. With the king." Vela's blood went cold. She spun and threw the door open. The king's chamber stood dark and empty. The bed had not been slept in. Benbenek was gone. A scrap of paper lay on the pillow. One line, in Severin's hand. "Come find him. Alone." Vela had cleared the watch. She had made the king safe from three enemies. And in doing so, she had missed the one who mattered. Benbenek was taken.
