Chapter 1

Volk stepped off the mats and knew his body had betrayed him. He was the UFC Featherweight Champion of the world. He had one more title defense to win. But at nearly forty, his legs did not bounce back the way they used to. Three hard weeks in his old camp had left him slower, not sharper. Last cycle, a week of rest cleared the ache. This time the ache stayed. He pressed a thumb into his thigh. The muscle still throbbed from Tuesday. His physio had warned him. The usual camp was grinding him down before the fight even came. Keep this up, and he would walk to the cage already half beaten. So Volk made the hardest call of his career. He sold the house back home and moved his wife and daughters across the ocean. He bought a quiet place in Scottsdale, near clean heat and dry air that his doctors swore would speed his recovery. He traded everything familiar for a shot at one more win. The move cost him more than money. His daughters cried about new schools. His wife packed boxes in silence. Every night Volk asked himself if an old man chasing a belt was worth all of this. Then he remembered the throb in his leg, and he kept packing. His first morning in Arizona, he drove to The MMA Lab. The gym gleamed, all glass and steel, built to make champions. He wanted to see if this new ground could hold a title. Inside, a lean fighter with dreadlocks was shadowboxing near the cage. Volk knew the face at once. Sean O'Malley. Former champion. The two had traded shots online for years, each sure he was the better man. O'Malley stopped and grinned. "They told me the old man moved to town." "Old man still holds a belt," Volk said. "You don't." The grin stayed, but something behind it hardened. O'Malley bounced on his toes. "You chase me all the way to my gym?" "Your gym?" Volk glanced at the mats, the heavy bags, the clean light. His recovery depended on this place. He had uprooted his whole family for it. He had not known he was walking into O'Malley's own camp. "My gym," O'Malley said. He wiped his hands and stepped closer. "You want to train here, you train by my rules." Volk felt the ache in his leg and the weight of the choice behind him. There was no house back home to return to. Every box was already here. He set his bag down on the mat. "Then I train here," he said. "And I'll heal faster than you'll like." O'Malley laughed and turned back to the bag. Volk stood in the gym that was supposed to save his body. He had fixed one problem and found another man standing in it.
