Chapter 2

Three weeks into camp, Volk woke sore but not broken. The dry heat worked. His legs moved again. But every session at the gym carried the same tension. O'Malley watched him like a landlord counting rent. The two men traded jabs with words, never trust. Volk knew he could heal here. He did not know if he could win here. Not while the man who owned the mats wanted him to fail. That morning Volk found O'Malley alone by the cage, taping his hands. O'Malley was the former champion who ran this place, Volk's old online rival turned reluctant host. He glanced up and smirked. "Come to quit, old man?" "Come to talk," Volk said. He sat on the edge of the mat. "You run drills soft on me. You watch my corner. You think I don't notice." O'Malley ripped the tape with his teeth. "My gym. My rules." "Your rules are holding me back." Volk leaned forward. "And they're holding you back too." O'Malley stopped taping. "How's that my problem?" "You want to fight again. Everyone knows it." Volk met his eyes. "You train me like a tourist, you get a tourist's work. You train me like a champion, I push you harder than anyone in this state." The gym went quiet. A heavy bag swung and stilled. O'Malley stood and crossed his arms. For a long moment he just stared. "You telling me you'd go full speed?" O'Malley asked. "No holding back?" "Every round," Volk said. "I'll show you things no camp here can. You show me what I'm slow to. We both get sharper." O'Malley wiped sweat from his jaw. The smirk faded into something harder, more honest. "I've wanted to hit you for ten years." "So hit me," Volk said. "Hard. Every day. Make me earn this belt." O'Malley let out a slow breath. He stuck out his taped hand. "Deal. But I don't go easy. You bleed, you clean it up yourself." Volk gripped the hand. The shake was firm. For the first time, neither man was smirking. "One rule from me," Volk said. "When I beat you in there, you don't make excuses." "When," O'Malley repeated, and laughed. A real laugh. "We'll see, old man." They worked that afternoon like enemies who had become partners. O'Malley drove him into the fence. Volk slipped punches and answered with sharp counters. By the end both men dripped and breathed hard. No one held back. Volk drove home to his desert manor that night with bruised ribs and a clear head. He had traded a hostile landlord for the best training partner alive. His body was healing. His edge was coming back. But he thought of the handshake. O'Malley would push him to new heights. And O'Malley wanted to fight again too. Volk had just sharpened the one man who might someday stand across the cage from him.
