Chapter 1

Wren Oakhallow was sent to kill the silver fox. Instead, a thread of magic now tied her to the creature she had hunted. She sat in the corner of the guild hall, her bow across her knees, the silver fox crest still burned into the wood. The fox lay six feet away, breathing shallow. When Wren shifted her weight, pain shot through the fox's ribs. When the fox flinched, her own chest ached. She wanted a partner in the hunt. Right now she had a wound she could not touch. She tried to loosen the leather binding on her wrist. The fox yelped. Wren froze, her hands shaking. "I don't know what I'm doing," she whispered. "Any wrong move could break us both." The door opened. A small figure with white hair and pale wings stepped inside, robes brushing the timber floor. Wren had heard travelers speak of the wandering Fae scholar who studied bonds like this one. She had not expected them to be so short, or to smell of crushed violets. "Don't pull the thread," Fennrin Moonwhisper said. They knelt by the fox without asking. "You'll tear it. Then you'll both bleed until neither wakes." "Then tell me how to cut it." Fennrin looked up, purple eyes steady. "You can't cut it. Not yet. The bond is fresh and tangled. Force it now and it kills you." They reached into their robe and drew out a heart-shaped fruit with a pearl sheen. "But you can calm it." Wren watched them press the fruit to the fox's lips. "What is that?" "It comes from a grove where things grow that ease pain. Feed the fox. Feel what the fox feels. Stop fighting the link, and it stops fighting you." Wren's jaw tightened. She had spent her whole life pulling triggers, not sharing breath with prey. But the fox's pain was her pain now. She took the fruit from Fennrin's hand. Her fingers trembled. She crouched close. The fox bared its teeth, then went still. Wren held the fruit out. "I'm not going to hurt you," she said. "Not anymore." The fox sniffed. Then it ate. Warmth spread up Wren's arm, into her chest. The ache in her ribs faded. The leather on her wrist loosened on its own, no longer straining. She could feel the fox's heartbeat slow to match hers. For the first time since the binding, she moved and nothing screamed inside her. Fennrin stood, folding their wings. "There. You've learned the first rule. The bond obeys trust, not force." Wren let out a long breath. Then the warmth twisted. A pull yanked at her chest, sharp and sudden, dragging her gaze to the door. The fox lifted its head, ears flat, staring the same direction. "That's not the fruit," Fennrin said quietly. Their smile was gone. "Something else is tied to this bond. And it just found you."
