Chapter 2
The pull at Wren's chest did not fade. She grabbed her bow and stood. The silver fox rose beside her, ears flat, watching the door. Whatever the bond had found, it was close, and the guild hall was no shelter. Her own people would loose arrows the moment they saw the fox. She had hunted for the guild her whole life. Now the guild would hunt her.
"We can't stay," she said. "They'll kill you on sight. And your death is mine now."
Fennrin Moonwhisper folded their wings tight. "Then move. The bond needs quiet to settle. Loud walls kill it." They pointed past the door. "There's a ranger station in the forest. Empty. No guild flags. You can work the thread there."
Wren shouldered the door open. Cold air hit her face. The fox pressed against her leg, and she felt its heartbeat drumming with hers. They ran together, hunter and prey moving as one shape through the trees. Twice the pull spiked, dragging her gaze back toward the hall. Something followed the bond like a hound follows a scent.
The station stood alone under the dark canopy. Weathered wood, a steep roof, thick vines climbing every beam. A carved sign read RANGER above a shut door. No smoke, no lamps, no guild crest. Wren shoved the door. It gave.
Inside smelled of dust and old rope. She barred the door and dropped her bow. Her hands shook. "Will this hold?"
"The walls, no." Fennrin knelt by the low sill. A trailing vine grew through a gap in the wood, its pale blossoms glowing faint in the dark. They cupped one flower. "But these will. Moonpetal. It grows where things want to hide. It muffles a bond from anything hunting it."
Wren watched them strip a handful of the glowing petals. "Tell me what to do."
"Feed one to the fox. Eat one yourself. Then sit. Breathe when it breathes. Let the thread go slack." Fennrin pressed a blossom into her palm. "This won't cut the bond. It hides it. That's all I can give you tonight."
Wren crouched. The fox met her eyes, silver ears twitching. She held out the petal. It sniffed, then took it from her fingers, gentle now. She swallowed her own. The pull at her chest loosened, thread by thread, until it hummed low and quiet.
Outside, the forest went still. The thing that had followed lost the scent. Wren felt it circle, confused, then drift away.
She sat with her back to the barred door, the fox warm against her side. For the first time she was not hunting it and it was not fleeing her. They were hiding together.
"It's gone," Fennrin said. "For now." They looked at the fox, then at Wren. "But it knows your bond exists. And a hidden thing is still a hunted thing. You'll have to face what's on the other end."
