Chapter 70

The airship touched down at Fairhaven by midday. The skyport smith met them on the dock with a long case. Inside lay Zach's new blade. He lifted it into the sun. The steel shone a sharp, cold blue, angled and clean, forged from Garrok's mountain steel and Fairhaven's sky-tech. It was beautiful. Zach swung it once and nearly dropped it. His wrist ached. Seven years behind an inn counter had made his hands soft. "That's not the same as your old sword," Talon said. He drew both katanas and stood loose on the dock. "The last one carried you. This one just cuts. You have to do the rest." Raven's brother had faked his death for five years to protect this family, and he did not soften hard truths. "Come on. Show me what you remember." Zach set his feet and struck. Talon slid aside and tapped the flat of a katana against Zach's ribs. "Dead," he said. Zach tried again. Talon caught the blade between his two and twisted. The blue sword spun from Zach's grip and rang on the planks. "Dead again." Zach's chest heaved. He had helped save this world once. Now he could not touch his own brother-in-law. "You're thinking like a cook," Raven said. She sat on a crate, arms crossed, but her voice was gentle. "Careful. Neat. You measure everything." She stood and picked up the blade. She pushed it back into his hands. "Stop measuring. You already know this. Your body knows it. Let it." Lyra stepped close. Her purple eyes studied his shoulders. "You're fighting the weight," she said. "Like the first day, years ago. Stop bracing against it. Let it fall where it wants, then guide it." She had watched him learn the old sword. She knew his mistakes before he made them. Zach breathed. He remembered the King's words from long ago. Stop fighting the weight. He let his shoulders drop. He stopped thinking about each step. Talon came in fast. This time Zach did not plan. He let the blade fall, then turned it. Steel met steel. He caught one katana and shoved it wide. Talon's eyes widened. He pressed harder, both blades flashing. Zach gave ground but kept his feet moving, kept the blue edge between them. He was not winning. But he was not dead. Sweat ran down his neck. His arms burned. He held on. Talon stepped back and lowered his swords. He was breathing hard too. "There," he said. "That's the man who killed Darkthorne." He sheathed the katanas. "You're rusty. But it's still in you. It'll come back with every mile north." Zach wiped his face and looked at the blade in his hand. It felt right now, an extension of his arm. He was armed again, truly armed. "Then let's not waste daylight," he said. "North. To the river." Whatever moved under those doors, he would meet it with steel in his hands.
